Install a BD Diesel EZ Amp & Increase Horsepower - Part 3/3
Dave Bowman: That’s pretty impressive! You haven’t fallen aren’t you?
Sam Memmolo: Men, that’s impressive as can be.
Dave Bowman: Hey, welcome back Two Guys Garage. Well Sam and I got the
truck on the dyno. We already made the run to get a base run in
stock form. Now, we’ve made a run with our chip up and running
and its pretty impressive, ain’t it?
Sam Memmolo: It sure is and I tell you what, right on the money too, I programmed
this for 60 horsepower. Now, we put in the easy amp
performanship. Remember I told you, you can program it from
inside the cab. It’s real simple. You follow the instructions. All you
have to do is turn the key on with the engine off, select drive 3201
which ever position you want. You mash the throttle three times,
full open. You cycle it, turn the key off and you got 30, 45, 60 or
90 horsepower. I selected 60 horsepower and the neat deal is the
easy amp works with the engine and the transmission, controls the
entire power train.
So what happen is it's monitoring the transmission where it’s
giving you engine power. If that transmission starts to slip a little
bit, it will back the power down so you'll not going to hear
anything. And they both has adaptor strategy. What happens is the
more you drive this thing up to a point, it teaches the transmission
exactly what's going on with the power, when to shift, what to do
with line pressure. Have to about a couple tank fulls about seven or
800 milers. This transmission will really put the power to ground.
Dave Bowman: Well now, speaking of power to the ground, that brings up another
point. And that is anytime you modify an engine, you generate
more horsepower and more torque. It’s going to put more load on
your transmission. And it’s if weak, you’re going to know it. Now
we got a tip for you and here’s what we’re talking about. This is
for the Dodge guys out that have the Dodge diesels. We got a little
problem with their torque conversion. Not bad but I mean, with
that extra horsepower in there, they tend to slip a little bit more.
Now BD power has fixed that and here’s what they’ve done. Here
is your stock, the stator right here and you can see this is okay. It
works alright for stock normal use but when you boost that power,
what you need to do is make that torque converter a lot more
efficient. As you can see right here, they got a lot wider space
between the fins. The fins are angled a little bit differently and it’s
a little bit wider than the stock stator. The reason for that is it let’s
more fluid to come through there. It works more efficiently.
Sam Memmolo: Sure, the stators what pictures the fluid against your driven
member okay and this is really what drops the temperature in that
torque converter. Get too much slush in the converter, heats up the
fluid, kills your transmission.
Dave Bowman: Now, speaking with temperature, take a look at this. This is our
piston and you can see the clutch material around here, a single
ring on here. Now if you look in here, you can see there are hot
spots here in the front cover that’s because it’s slipping. Well
here’s what BD has done to cure that problem.
Sam Memmolo: Right, that just stock torque converter clutch. This is BD’s torque
converter clutch, much wider material here, a second ring, so you
got double clutch. I think it about 190% more clutch material than
the stock torque converter and look at this neat front cover.
Dave Bowman: Boy that’s nice, it is a machine front cover. It’s a heavy duty high
performance unit. So what this will do, in essence it makes the
torque converter much more efficient allowing you to get the
horsepower and the torque from the torque converter into the
transmission. Now that’s another subject, come on I’ll show you
what that’s all about. Now we got a high performance torque
converter. You need a high performance transmission to go along
with it.
Sam Memmolo: That’s right. BD power has got a complete remanufactured
transmission really set up for that Dodge diesel.
Dave Bowman: Now, what they’ve done is they modified the transmission. They
got a high volume oil pump here. They also have added about 25%
more clutch material to the clutch packs here and of course back
here.
Sam Memmolo: They’ve also taken care of the planetary. They got rid of the
aluminum planetary. It’s all steel. It got a special valve body that
locks up second gear, brings the line pressure up. And of course
right here, we’ve got the pressure lock and what this does, it keeps
the line pressure up under exhaust break application to keep your
clutch engaged.
Dave Bowman: So, the net result now is you got the complete package, a high
performance torque converter, high performance transmission to
work with the entire engine mod you’ve made to the engine. So
this is to what you have to do.
Sam Memmolo: That’s right; this takes care of the weak link in your common
powered Dodge.
