Did you think that architectural details only belonged on the inside of a home? Well, you would be wrong, have a look at this, we took a really plane gable and gave it face lift. If you want to see how this is done, stick around, because it costs us less than $100 and we did it in half a day, you could do this. The gable is the triangular shape that's formed at the end of the house, because of the slope of the roof. If you have a look around this neighborhood, there are several different designed gables. It all comes down at the specific design of your own home.
Now we are going to choose a sunburst design. It's directly reflected in the front door of the home. It's going to have very clean lines and it's architecturally driven around this home a lot. Alright, now let's get started and paint the materials, because it's much easier to paint them down here than up there. Choosing the right material is extremely important when you're building things outside. Today, we're going to use poplar, the hardwood with a nice coat of paint, it will last years.
Now, to create the angle, I'm going to use my sliding bevel. I put it up next to the triangular section and that's what it is. Now, the angle on the bevel is what we need to transfer over on throughout piece of timber. Some screws, some glue and this baby is almost going to be ready to go up. This here is a counter sinker, if you use one of these what happens is that it actually borrows down and it reduces the head on the screw. So that it's underneath the actual layer of wood. Once that goes in we'll fill it out with putty, and it's going to be watertight.
The next thing we are going to do is actually put the sunburst design in. I can't wait, I can feel the heat already. Now here is a little design tip for you guys working at home, and that is whenever you are building something that's going to go outdoors, try and screw everything together from underneath. What happens is when it rains, it will give you less chance of rot, because the water has no way to fill. That's set, I know what you are thinking, this is gorgeous, I mean look at that, so easy to build, so cheap and it's really going to make a big difference to the street scape of this house.
You know what that means, that's right, you can almost tear the money right now. Now this is a very plain and flat gable end. Now with a little bit of design and architectural detail and a very small budget, it is a beautiful feature to have at the front of your home. This is what everybody is going to see when they first look.
