Male: The family building this house on the Texas Hill Country wants to add a swimming pool, but they want a pool that can be installed very quickly and will require very little maintenance. For these reasons, they chose to install a one-piece fiberglass pool. This trilogy pool is made at the factory, like an inside out boat haul. Then It’s delivered to the jobsite completely built and ready for installation.
Before the installation begin, a backhoe operator digs the hole into its rough shape. Then the crew arrives to install the pool, they first established the exact level of the hole, so that it fits the pool like a glove. Rey Cronise is a material scientist at NASA for 15 years. He brought his knowledge of composite materials to the swimming pool industry.
Rey: During this phase, this is a actually the critical phase and what we’re trying to do is establish that the hole is sloped at the right angle, so that it meets the bottom of the pool when the pool gets in. And in order to do that, we’ve got stakes and string, that we’re using a laser level to establish the level and then they’ll bring the gravel on backfill it back up to where the string is. So the pool will then just sit on that gravel bed.
Male: A ten ton crane lifts the pool off the truck. The owners didn’t want to loose any of the trees in their backyard so the crane had to lift the pool over the house in order to set it down into the hole.
Rey: Typically when you set the hole in place, you’re going to have to raise it and lower it, and use some gravel and some here, take some away there, to get it set level. Ideally what we’d like to see is that the whole pool is not out of level, more than inch from the highest to the lowest point. I think one of the things we are most excited about as company is the opportunity to allow a customer to do it yourself. With a do it yourself kit, since we are building the pool in the factory, all you have to do is to get the hole correct, put it in and do a little PVC plumbing. Every one else that requires an expertise will be hired subcontractors.
Male: The pool comes from the factory with a cut out to fit the outlet that takes the water to the filter for cleaning and heating.
Rey: Once you have the pool in place and leveled, what we’ll do is begin to put water into the pool, again to make sure that the pool is perfectly settled. Were going to check that again the next day and to make sure that it’s leveled. As you do your PVC plumbing you want to make sure to use a good primer cleaner to clean off the surface, that prepares it for a bond. And then you apply a liberal amount of glue to the surface and to the mating surface, the most important thing is that when you put the piece on to make sure you have at least a quarter turn and that make sure that you’ve got the glue evenly spread around the fitting. At that point, you will get the plumbing down to the ground and out of the hole.
Male: Once the plumbing is done, the pool is partially filled with water and the perimeter around the pool is backfilled with a non expansive material like washed gravel or sand.
Male2: One of the places that trilogy is making big gain in fiberglass pools is the surfaces themselves. This surface material is called granicoat and it’s made out of polymer resin, comes in six different colors, it’s a very similar material to what you find on a kitchen counter top or a bathtub. The best thing about it is, very easy to clean because its non-porous, which means it’s really, almost maintenance free.
Rey: And there’s no long term maintenance, this is not a pool that your going to have to replace a liner in five or ten years, you’re not going to have to resurface the pool every five to seven years. These are the same kind of finishes that you would find on your kitchen and your bathroom, now they’re in your backyard. So now that we have the pool installed and leveled, the plumbing done, the spa’s hook up to the pool, I want to show you a little bit about the filtration system.
This system is state of the art system, it allows complete one touch control, we’ve got a pump and our energy efficient two stage pump, that will circulate the water through the system, a cartridge filter and this allows the customer only to touch it once or twice a season, so there’s a very low maintenance there. And as well we got a heater to heat the, both the pool and the spa. And automatic chlorinator, which will add the sanitizer to the water, and then finally we got the aqua length RS by Jandy, and what’s really neat about this is it’s simply one touch operation.
So whether you want to turn on the spill way on or the spa, change the speed of the pump or turn the automatic cleaner on the fiber optic lights, everything can be controlled with this one box. In addition, this box has radio transmitter which allows the control from anywhere in the pool area, they also got a system that ties this box in with the home automation system and that allows it also control all of the equipment in the pool.
Male1: After that, the ground settles for a couple of weeks before the pouring of the concrete deck. When installing the fiberglass pool shell, a critical component is the cantilever deck and tile that will surround the pool. This gives the pool a traditional look and keeps maintenance to a minimum. This trilogy pool comes with a lifetime warranty against cracking and leaking.
