Hey everyone, today we are at a friends house at an undisclosed location, he has requested. But one of my best friend just bought a house and it needs a hot water heater, so this is our first day at the house, and we will going to replace this hot water heater. And it is actually really simple to do, come here, come here. So watch us do this, okay.
The first thing you had to do is you get to turn off the power to your hot water heater and drain all the water out of it. so that will going to be the fun part, once that’s done, then it will going to be easy, alright. First thing you do is turn the water off, turn the supply water off to the tank, the valve is stuck. So if you can’t see this because the panel is against the wall but is want to make sure that the power is turned off going to the hot water heater before we do anything. So, to drain this tank, there is no floor drain, there is no sub pump in this place. So, I got a flexible bucket and I’ve got a portable pump that I attached a garden hose into and the garden hose runs outside. So, if I don’t put the dogs in the video every week, I got email from people. They like nice show Eric but where are the dogs?
They’re drinking the water.
Hey, hey, despite, we’re doing the water heater but here are your dogs, okay. So our water is now drained, it took forever to drain the water out of here. And now we got the incoming water and the hot water out, they both have union connections on them. So we are just going to disconnect those, and then we are going to wrestle this hot water heater in the corner of the basement, I’m not carrying this thing back out. This is just a screw connection, okay, water will going to spit out of this probably, very disappointing. There you go the heater is disconnected. It is very smart that they put this on cinder blocks because if your basement floods then it doesn’t damage your hot water heater.
Eric, Eric, what color are you right now?
Color red, the new hot water heater is smaller because we are not going to live here full time. We are not a giant family. But this a high efficiency, 240 volt electric and I got a really neat mounting kit for it, coz what we want to do is take this copper wires, copper pipes, and connect them into the heater. And with these flexible stainless steel hoses, that will make it a lot easier to do that. Okay, now we are going to do a little soldering, we had to re orient some of the piping very similar, very simple though. Here we go. We have our water supply, and hot water going up connected. Put Teflon tape we go to the highest point of the house where there is a bathroom, wherever the water pipe goes the highest in your house go and turn the hot water valve open on that one. Now we are going to fill this tank. In a perfect world, we are going to turn this valve.
Nothing going to happen though, because you have to turn this one too.
We turned it off for a while here. So what is happening now is all the air in the tank is being displaced by the water, so basically in the upstairs bathroom it is spitting like crazy. You should usually take the sediment filter out of your faucet in the bathroom or wherever you’re going to having the valve open, coz all those junk is going to come out. Fill it all the way, and now we have a leak. All right, so we are going to remove our soldered joint once again. Wow that’s hot, let that cool off. Make sure when you’re putting your torch somewhere you don’t set the joist on fire like I did. See I have the heat in the bottom, and the solder on the top and the heat will draw the solder in to the joint, very nice. I’m probably putting too much in. All right, no leaks so far, we are going to hook up the electrical now, so this will go through over here.
Obviously the power is off.
Obviously your powered is turned off. Take your wire nuts and screw the wire nuts down until it is not moving anymore. So we are all connected now. We got our electrical in, we have our water in. You make sure the hot water heater is full of water before you do your electrical; we will going to go over and throw the breaker now. Cross your fingers. This getting quite warm, that’s warm. Wow!
Got steam.
Wow! That’s hot. Okay, it works. So once again, this is something you can do. It is not to hard, wear safety equipment. I think I was forgetting to wear safety goggles by the way, and turn off the electricity before you start working with it. Make sure you have the right circuit breakers. Follow the instructions, if all else fails read the directions and then come to the greenhouse and tell us your story about installing appliance, al lright. Thanks for watching, I’ll see you later.
