This P-knuckle here is what determines the tension on the chain, and it pulls a lot of tension as you can see. You can get better chain retention if you are having trouble with the chain dropping off or banging, then you can overhaul the P-knuckle and basically what you are doing is, there is a spring, this is the spring for the P-knuckle and it sticks out through this hole and then there is another spring hole available and see how the tension goes like this, that's the way the thing rotates.
So you are pushing the spring that way. If you were to remove that spring from this hole into that hole then it will start out even higher, so there would be more tension on the spring and it would be just even harder to push to be at the same position. So that gives you greater retention of the change and while you are at it, yeah, you can put some more grease in here. There is just a set screw and that's what keeps the thing from sliding up, and once you have that set screw out of there the thing will slide down.
This is the groove that that stopper screw runs in. I am just going to put a little more grease on the spring itself, it really hurts to have grease between the ring coils.
Now as you saw that's the spring hole that was in before. Now I am going to lift the spring up and move it to the next spring hole. And that's going to give it more chain tension.
On a mount bike, it's so important to have your chain on there. Well, if you have any doubt about chain retention or you have any problems with it, this adjustment is a good one and it's even worth. Had been doing on a new derailleur when you first get it. And there is a hole in here, the other end of the spring goes, so line that up, obviously the shaft goes into this center, housing in here.
So I can feel that it's clipped in and now all I have to do is rotate, so this pin here is ahead of that stop and then pluff (ph) that back in there, screw that in. So now my return spring is way stronger, this is really going to pull the chain back more. So that's how you do the P-knuckle overhaul.
