Now when I first strolled into this room, there was something that I noticed and that was that it had no personality. Now it has more accent than I do. With a little bit of picture rails, some ribbon, and some great photos, and always for under $100. You want to say how it's done? Check it out!
Now as far as tradition goes, they say that picture rails should be at 66 inches from the floor to the top of the roof. But in this circumstance, because we have a very not high ceiling, we're going to raise it up to the door height.
So what we're going to use for the picture rail is actually this molding here. I'm going to put a nice bead of glue in the back. Now it's going to be a load and possibly valuable things hanging off it, so be liberal with the glue.
Now a great timesaver is to pre-paint the picture rail and the great tip is to use some white putty come along, fill all the nail holes and look at that, dead set, you can't see it.
Now if you wanted to, you could actually paint the picture rail with the same color as the wall. The reason we left it white though, is because it's a great linear detail. It separates the bottom half from the top half creating a longer wall. Now these are actually picture rail hooks. Here is a design tip; paint them the same color as the rail and they'll blend in a little more.
Now I want to show you a couple of choices that we have here to actually hang the pictures. Now the first one we have is some clear plastic. This is almost like a fishing line. If you hang the picture with this, it will look like it's floating in midair. Now the second one we have here is the wire. The wire is kind of cool, but it gives more of an industrial feel. Now what we're trying to do is have a colonial style room.
Now the third one and the one that's definitely my favorite, because it's the one we're going to use is ribbon. This is really easy to attach to the picture, hangs in place very stylishly, and I think you'll agree screams out colonial room and really ties in well with that new picture rail. There you go. Now that's the last one.
This high wall space was cold and lacking in architectural appeal. Now it is screaming style with the little bit of ribbon, some beautiful picture rails and less than $100 and half a day we really made a big difference here.
