Hi, I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop. I told myself when I started making this videos, I wasn’t going to make a video on how to hang a door. There’s a lot involved in it. It takes years of experience to learn how to do it properly but I found a new product and I think it will give you quite a chance.
Door Installation
The product that we’re going to use to hang this door today is a relatively new product. It's called Quick Plumb door hanger. It's made by Express Products. I’m not sure where they’re from but apparently they have a website and I believe they even have a video there and actually I already watched it. This is what they provide you in their package.
Supposedly, this is enough for doing two doors although I recommend you to go to their site and take a look at the way they recommend doing it. First, I’m going to do it a little bit different than their directions to try to help simplify the process for the homeowners and do-it-yourselfers.
I ran across this product at my wholesaler. They were giving them away for free. They want carpenters to start trying to use them and see what they think of them. I did hang a couple of doors with them. I like the results but there were still some tweaking and judgment calls that had to be made. I kind of went off to what they said and I added to it, change the way you use them a little bit where I think it will give you more of a fighting change as a novice or a home remodeler to be able to do this.
As for their instructions, they recommend that you come to about the center of the hinge. You line this little clip up with the front edge as the lead edge of the door and then with the screws provided, put the three screws in making sure that this is kept tightly against the front of the door as you’re doing it. Repeat the process with the middle and the bottom hinge. As for their instructions, repeat the process approximately, opposite the hinge side that you’ve already put on.
According to their recommendations, it's time to hang the door but I’ve got a little bit of a different way I’d like to see you try it. Directly opposite the clips, you’ve just install on the hinge side of the door. Go ahead and install the remaining six clips on the opposite side of the door. After you’ve installed it, opposite the one on the hinge side go ahead and take a pair of pliers and bend this flange out straight like this. Repeat with the other five on the side of the door.
On the hinge side to your door, this tab is still going to be bent just the way it was send at the factory directly opposite in all six locations you’re going to have another one where you had bent this flange straight out. According to their instructions, measure approximately 1/2-inch in from your rough opening and put a mark. Do the same thing on the other three sides. Coming off for your mark, making sure that this is dead level, very important, go ahead and start making a line and make your line go all the way up and down the side of the door.
Now that you have the plumb lines on all four sides of the door, both sides, it's time to take the door and put it in place. Take a level and put it on the top of your door. As you see, this isn’t level. What we’re going to have to do is we’re going to have to stick a shim underneath he bottom side of that door to make up for this difference here where it's too low on the hinge side.
Top the shim underneath the door until the header is level. If this gets carpet, you can probably just cut the shim off and leave it out underneath here and the carpet will fill the void. If this is tile or hard wood, what you’ll have to do is cut the bottom of the jamb off on the opposite side, remove the shim and let it come down tight to the floor.
Now, that your header is level, it's time to start anchoring the door. Starting at the top hinge with about the same space on this side as the other side, go ahead and ran in your first screw. With the top hinge screwed, see these three little notches here? Find a little notch in the spot corresponding to it that it's closest to and put a mark.
Now coming down to the one below it, making sure that you’re marking in the same place on the little mark, mark it here. And coming down below it, again, making sure you’ve marked the same spot as it was up above which is here then what you need to do is line this marks up with that plumb line and put screws in these two holes.
Starting on the opposite side of the door, same side as the hinge, this margin here needs to be mashed right at this pin. So what you do is you adjust the door by putting it in. You can measure it if you like. I can do it by eye and then once it's in, go ahead and put that cap screw in.
As you see by the three notches on this last one here we’re right at the high side of this bump. And now, we’re going to go down to the second one. We’re going to mark that same spot at the high side of that bump. We’re going to adjust that over to the line and screw it. Repeat the same thing on the bottom screws. The door does open and close. I’m not totally thrilled with the margins though so at this point I’m going to loosen this screw and I’m going to bring this door over because it seems like the margin on this side is just a little large.
Now, I’m happy with all the margins with just a minor adjustment of backing the screw out and adjusting it left and right a little bit. I’m very happy with the margins. The door doesn’t open and close. It's fine.
Now, it's time to go to the other. At this point would be what they recommend is stopping. They’re done, go ahead and put trim on it. I think the opposite side of the door on the bottom is still a little loose. So let’s go over to the other side.
Starting at the top where you bent the flange out with your pliers, go ahead and take your hammer, bend the flanges back down until it's touching the wall. Go ahead and repeat that with the other five on this side of the door. Starting from the top bracket and working your way down, repeat the procedure on this side exactly the same way as you did on the other side. But you have to start at the top and come down.
So there you go, the door is set. The margins are good. If I open the door a crack and I put the level on it. It shows real nice and plumb. It seems to be pretty solid. Latch is nice.
