Hi! This is Michael Hixon from KidSafe and I'm going to show you how to baby-proof your kitchen cabinet with the Tot Lok by Safety 1st. The tools that you'll need to install the Tot Lok are a drill, a screwdriver and a few drill bits, that's all it will take.
The Tot Lok comes with a handy installation template with adhesive so you can just stick it on and it will show you where to drill the holes. The first step in installing the Tot Lok is determine where you need to place the lock. In this case, we have a place to install the catch piece along the top and you don't want to put it too far over. So I'm going to put it at the top edge and closely to the middle. If you have a cabinet with a side edge, you could also mount on the edge and if you're absolutely healthy, you can mount it upside down on the bottom edge.
The next step is to peel the adhesive off of the template and stick it on to the edge of the frame where you want the lock to be. The next step is to install 1/8 inch drill bit into your drill. You fold the template back and there are two holes that you drill here, you just need to drill small pilot holes for the screws.
Okay, now we have the holes drilled for the catch piece, we want to peel off the backing on the template and close the door and the template will come over to the door and that will show us where to drill for the holes in the door. So you simply peel off this adhesive marked under floor and close the door firmly. The door will hit the adhesive and the template will be transferred to the door and shows you where to screw.
This template shows you where to drill big center hole for the magnet and for the smaller holes that hold the lock in place. So the next step is to draw the small pilot holes for the locks, there are four of them. Set three is put a 930 seconds bit into your drill, that will be for the larger hole for the lock and it will be applied here.
When measuring the depth of a cabinet, you put the sleeve on so that there is an 8 inch of wood wrapped when you drill. You want to make sure that this sleeve remains in place, so you maintain the proper depth of the bit and you do not drill to the cabinet. You can accomplish that by getting additional sleeves in multiple boxes of the Tot Lok that you might have or if you only have one of the sleeves, you can tape it in place to make sure that you're at the proper depth.
So this is a drill bit with multiple sleeves applied to it, making sure that depth is maintained and I do not drill to the cabinet. You can now peel off the template and discard, you can see the holes that we have drilled for our cabinet lock.
Step four is to screw in the catch piece into the two holes that we drilled previously into the cabinet. Be sure to mount the catch with the longer leg facing outwards. Now the catch is in place. Step five is to assemble the lock and screw it into place. It's a good idea to test your lock by putting in the magnetic plunger and putting it into the hole and then you can take the magnetic key to make sure it's working properly, so you just put the key behind the lock, and if it depresses, you know that your hole is deep enough and the lock is working. Now you can screw it in.
Step five is to line up the lock with the holes we've already pre-drilled and simply screw the lock to the cabinet door. Now that the lock in the catch is installed, it would be a good time to test it to see that it's working properly. It closes, catches and we can open it. We take the magnetic key. It opens, and you verify that the lock is working.
Step six is to install the unlocking arm. It simply snaps on, make sure that where it's unlocked, are facing upwards, there are two holes for it, you line it up, and snap it on.
You can use this if you ever want to disable the lock. So you simply depress, flip up the arm and now the lock is disabled for as long as you want it. To unlock it, simply flip it down. So the lock is now working, you simply take the magnetic key, place it where the lock is, the lock will open, and you can open it.
It's a good idea to mark with a small pencil mark where the lock is, so you know where to find it and you don't have to search around. The final step is to store your Tot Lok key in a safe place away from your kids. For lot of people that's going to be right in their refrigerator high up out of the reach.
