Hey guys, Chris again from classicvwbugs.com, and I've got another tip for you today, and that is putting the rubber seal for your vent window into the door, on your early Bug, 65 and later Bugs, the seal actually went on to the vent window first, and then you put it in the door, unlike 64 and earlier, you have to actually have the rubber seal put into the door first, and then you put the window in.
So I'm going to show you how to that and a little trick, just to kind of get you going here. It is a little time consuming, some times; it can get frustrating. I've tried all the scenarios and how to put this in, so I think I've figured out a really good way for you to do it, and that's it. I'm going to basically take the camera now, and show you closeup, what you're going to have to do.
Okay, so what you're going to need here, is a nice handy-dandy screwdriver, and may be even some WD-40, or some silicon spray. And then what I like to do is, if you notice here, make sure you have the slit for the vent window attaches up here, make sure this slit is on the outside lip here, that's how you know you got the right side door. Then make sure before you do anything, you want to line up this hole, that's here on the seal, and there is a hole down in here inside the channel that the shaft is going to go through from the vent window. So you got to want to line that up first. Okay, so just make sure that's lined up, up and down, and then what I like to do is, if you see here on the seal, you've got a rubber track in here, that's supposed to fit into the metal track.
I spray with WD-40, like I said silicon to get it lubricated, okay, all up and down the seal, and then basically, I like to put one side in, so you put one of these corners in, one part of the track, okay, inside the track, in the door. As you put that in, then once that smug down, you'll see it flattened out on the door, and on the car. Then either with your screwdriver, or sometimes you can with your hand press the other side down, and then a little pop-in, or like I said, you put the one, put one in, and then you use a screwdriver to lift up this flap and get the other side down in there, it does take some time.
So you know, and you got to want to basically start. I usually start after the catch here, and you can see that chrome catch up here that the latch hooks on to. I usually start from here, this way first on my way up, get it in, but then you got to want to have it out still, because you got to get the vent window in, and then in the vent window you do not have to undo. I'll show you some, that you not have to this out, the little swing swirl here that basically that hooks into the door. The later Bugs, that you have to put the seal on the vent window first, you have to drill this out, okay, and then put the seal on, and then put the clamp back in. These early cars you don't have to do that.
So like I said, I put the seal in from here, basically to back here, and then it gets screwed in here, the hinge, so then I slip the hinge through the rubber, get it in, screw it down, and then I start feeding the rest of the rubber on its way up. And then on the bottom with this catch you just slit this part of the rubber here, just cut that right here, right where this line is, so that there's a small slit so then this catch can go around that and through the rubber, and then you feed it all the way down.
I know it's kind of tough here, I don't have another cameraman to really focus on me, but I just have positioned in one section here, so if you got any question about the vent window, give me a holler. there has always been a lot of questions about this topic, because it is kind of difficult to get it in, and people get in very frustrated.
One thing I do recommend before you do any of the vent window installation, get some masking tape, masking tape, nothing else, not duct tape, nothing else like that, and you want to put that on the edge around the door where the vent window is going to go in, even on the other side. Why? Because if you're using a screwdriver or any other sharp tools; what's bound to happen is, you go to want to slip in and want a scratch in the paint, and then you get really pissed off. So, while I know this, it's happened to me. So that's a long tip for today, vent window installation, like I said, if you have any questions give me a holler, I hope I explained it better for you, and that's it, alright, take care!
