Hey! And welcome to watchmojo.com. Today we're going to be learning some movements in Irish dancing. First of all we're going to learn how to put our shoes on.
When you actually buy your first pair soft shoe, it doesn't matter which foot you put it on. Eventually, they'll curve themselves so you'll know which foot goes where. So you want it really tight, you're going to go with each lace.
Unlike ballet, you're not going to go up. We're going to follow the cross and go underneath our foot and then back over. The reason we go underneath our foot is to improve our arches so that when we're pointing our toes, it's actually pulling our shoe in. So we will have nice points when we are dancing.
So, now we're going to look over a couple of movements that are common in Irish dancing in the soft shoe. For the most part you're going to see a lot of pointing of the toes, you can never see in between the legs. When you're pointing make sure that your back leg is for the most part covered. Same thing with your heel, if your toe is pointing up to the ceiling, there's still no back leg.
So when you're standing you want your foot turned out and your front foot with a nice arch and your arms are right by your side and not like this. You're keeping them in, your body is straight and you're extending right from your hips.
So the next move we're going to go over is the lift. Your right foot is in front, you're going to lift it up and bring the other one in front of it.
So another movement is the skip. You go hop 1, 2, 3 then your left foot is in back and you're going to bring this in front. So you're going to hop up to your bum hop, left, 2, 3. It sounds complicated, but it's really just like walking with a hop and a jump in between.
Now having completed all of your soft shoe dances and reached a certain level, your teacher will usually bring you into hard shoes. For the treble you're only using your tip; trebles are in every dance. So your front tip is going to hit the ground twice like so. That's really how you start with the trouble.
Next, you would do with your other foot. After lots of practice you can actually start doing real trebles which are more like this.
This is a Click. These are called Toe Walks. These will be more advanced Toe Walks.
And this is Kevin. He will be learning a basic Irish dancing step today. So our shoulders are back and then our arms are going to be placed right by our sides and then our feet are going to form a V. You're going to put your right foot in front and point your toe to the ground.
Exactly, hop, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Good! So to complete that step you would also perform it with your left foot in front.
