Hi, my name is Sean, the Silver Fox. And today I am going to go through a video on what you can do to help keep yourself warm when you are sleeping at night during the winter months.
There’s a few simple things you can do to help trap in as much of the warm air your body create and help you lose them a lot. Quite simple things, when you lay in the ground or on a hammock or any sleeping bag, you lose quite a lot of air through something known as pumping. Now, your body heats up and the reason you wear layers is because your body heats up the layers of air between the materials of fabric you have and when you are in the bed, you’re going around, all that moving force the air out. So, things are open neck collars. I’ll take the scarf off. Open that collar like this, okay. The air is forced out, so you do your buttons up, okay. You got a flat face if you do that out okay. You make sure you cough it on up—
You tuck your trousers into socks. A very important tip actually and whenever I come out during the winter months, I always pack a dry pair of wool socks and here you go. I had my pair of socks ready for this evening. Now, the reason for that is, it doesn’t matter how much walking you have done or how warm you think it is or how cold you think it is. Your feet looks sweated quite a lot of sweat into your socks. So, you might think your socks are warm or are dry but actually they’ll be containing quite a lot of moisture. So, the last thing you do before you get to bed is you change your socks. Your socks—day off, put your dry socks, tuck your trousers into our socks; that really keep your feet warm.
And as for your head, you need some sort of a hat. Now, I always carry these in my hip pack, come winters and winter and summer and these ones were actually a runners hat okay. Does not matter what the make is. This is like—quick drying polyester hats that runs probably that run as way during the winter. So, I carry these and my hat in the bag and I also got a pair of gloves, okay.
Now, keep them in there all year round. They compact to really small; don’t wear any thin but even during the summer month, you get yourself a cold snack in the mornings. But during the winter, I go back to the trustee woolen hat. You know I think—I think it’s a brilliant fabric, so that is what I wear during the winter and I’ve not had a problem with that. So, as long as wool socks on; dry wool socks. I’ve got a nice wool hat and then with all my cuffs and sleeves and my zips, things like that. Trap as much air in as possible.
When you come to make your—if you’re sleeping in the floor, your mattress, make sure you’ve got a good 12, 18 of leaf litter on the ground and before you get start you know, one of the first things you want to do off to making a fire is get your bed made. Get your bed made and lay in it. Lay on the leaves, put your blanket down or your sleeping bag or whatever you’re sleeping on and lay it for five or ten minutes because there is nothing worse and I’ve done this by experience than it gets; ten o’clock at night for example, you got to get in bed and you find there is a root right in the middle of your back and you then you go—try and stop messing about doing that or you got try and do when it’s wet and you got all your dry stuff ready to go to bed.
Okay, so lay in your bed as soon as it’s made and just check it’s comfy. Your top obviously, again make sure you bring the sides right down, cocoon yourself and you want to trap as much of the air in around you as possible and if you’re between two trees and there’s a gap, try and block off at least one end if you possibly can.
If you follow those procedures, you really should be okay. I set off sleep out most of the year round with my wool blanket, my wool liner and my top and I am pretty much okay.
If it is really wet or snowy, then I do bring my baby bag out to keep the moisture off between me and the leaves. But other than that, have fun and get out and use it on winter because a lot of people they go out during the summer months and maybe the spring and then if you get about the autumn and the winter, then you can have some fantastic times out of woods. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. The animals are quiet and down and it’s the great time of the year, why give up half a year because it’s gone cold.
All right well, thank you guys. I’ll see you soon.
