There’s nothing like the smell of fresh cut grass. For the sight of a healthy well-kept lawn, I suspect every homeowner wants a lawn to be proud off.
So, here are a few tips to help you attain and maintain a healthy well-kept lawn year around. The first and most important thing is to water your lawn regularly. Lawns need one inch of water a week either from irrigation or rain. So, be sure your lawn gets enough water one way or another. Another way to keep a healthy lawn is to mow at a high level on a regular basis.
Now, there are many different types of grasses. So, be sure to visit homedepot.com or your local store to find the correct mowing height for your lawn.
Mowing at a high level produces tall grass. And tall grass provides shade for your soil. It keeps your lawn cooler and prevents weeds from germinating. Believe it or not, the best weed deterrent is a lush, healthy lawn. So, concentrate your efforts on providing your grass with the best growing condition possible. This includes plenty of sun and rich well-drained soil. And don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty to pull out weeds by hand when needed, it maybe more for you than the grass to play in the dirt again.
Another thing to consider is aerating your lawn. This will allow water and fertilizers to reach the roots. There are several types of tools available for aerating lawns. If your lawn is small, there is a foot-press aerator that you can push into the soil like a spade. If you have a larger yard, you may want to buy or rent an engine-powered aerator or consider hiring a lawn service. Whichever tool you use, make sure the soil is moist but not too wet.
Finally, if you choose to use herbicides, follow label directions, and remember to apply them with care as they can damage perennials and shrubs.
