How to Keep a Marriage Healthy After Birth

Wendy: Hi, I’m Wendy from New York and I’ve just had my first child and I’m having trouble finding time for my baby and for my husband. How do I keep the marriage healthy after I’ve had kid?

Mary Coussons: That’s a relay good question Wendy and it’s one that new families and couples struggle with all the time. And particularly with the new demands of having your child, it’s equally important to maintain the demands that your marriage places on you. We’ve known for a long time that one of the best ways to be a good parent is to be a good spouse and to have a healthy relationship. So, although it maybe really tempting to put your marriage on the sideline, now that you’ve had this new baby it’s actually more important now than ever to make sure that you and your husband or your partner spend some quality time together. And particularly once you get more used to being a mom and having your baby you realize that your baby does well being with others, being with the trusted neighbor or sitter or a grandparent or an aunt or an uncle even for a couple of hours so that you and your husband spend some time together.
