Super idea! If you're comfortable doing something dangerous and unnecessary, such as going forward without safey devices, you're ready for off-shore sailing. Brilliant! Better advice would look something like this: when you've mastered correct and efficient use of safety harnesses and are able to move to the foredeck efficiently (harnessed and wearing a PFD) you can check one thing off the list of skills essential to off-shore sailing.

I feel if people say when do I know I'm ready to go cruising? I say first you take your boat out and 15—and you put your heart on the wind and you leave your safety harness off and you grab a bucket and you put something like a coil of—and so it has a little weight. And you get out of the cockpit and climb up the—inside the boat. Go to the bower. Touch the bower of the boat. Come back on the lower side. Get back on the cockpit. The first thing that I'll do is I will teach you where you want hand holds and where are the slip spots on your deck that you want to fix. Then you do it in 25 knots without the harness because there might be some day when you have to rush out of there and you forget to put harness on. So you’ve learned. If you feel okay about going there, then you're ready for your first off shore passage.
