Hello! I am Kathy Reily, I'm Coordinator of the Diabetes Program at Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Virginia, and I also work with the American Diabetes Association.
Today, I'm going to be talking to you about how to stay and live healthy with diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that has many complications but can be managed along with your physician and healthcare providers to include nurses and dietitians.
Management includes working with diet, exercise, taking medication is necessary and having some kind of education class to help you learn the tools of daily management.
There are just a couple of safety issues that I would like to discuss before we get started and those would be related to the lancets, the syringes or the pen needles that you might be using to check your blood sugar or take insulin.
These needles should only be used one time, you can dispose these needles in a sharps container that you can purchase from a local pharmacy or you can use an empty bleach bottle, or an empty liquid laundry detergent bottle from home, dispose of the needle in the container and screw on the cap when it's full, just right needles or sharps on the outside of the container and dispose within your trash, not your recycle bins.
Before we get started, I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a registered dietitian and I have a degree in Dietetics & Nutrition from the University of Texas. I also am a Certified Diabetes Educator and have been working in the field of diabetes education for about the last 16 years.
Now, let's begin to talk about diabetes.
