The next of the fluids we're going to look at is transmission fluid. Use the dipstick for right here, see if we find here. Besides checking the level, we want to look at the condition of the fluid and if you look at this fluid, it's kind of a brownish color. And certainly it should be a nice bright cranberry red color. Get real close in on it, you can actually see a little debris in the fluid, where you can feel it, and feel the debris in that fluid.
Look that is your clutch discs, they are fragmenting inside the transmission. Now this is another one of those preventative maintenances, as you can make a choice to have it service regularly. Transmission fluid, you want to do about every 25,000-40,000 miles as a regular maintenance. And you should also besides just checking your level, you should also check the condition of your fluid, because this is going to way out of transmission.
Transmission repair or replacement, you generally end up in a price range of $1600-$4500 depending on what kind of car you drive, and you can definitely prolong the life of your transmissions, especially in the newer cars by just doing a regular transmission fluid check.
It depends on what type of transmission you have to do a complete transmission flush, near the ball park that's between a $120-$150 depending on the capacity, because we want to do a complete flush and it gets all of the fluids out of the valve body and torque converter, the standard shaft housing. You can't say, a 100% of the fluid will be exchanged, because somebody might give you another technicality that there was one drop left.
Nowadays, the idea of changing the pan gasket as a service -- if it's leaking, it's definitely a good idea, but most transmissions now, they have screens we just do a reverse flush, which is like a blood transfusion. New fluid is being pushed in as old fluid is being pulled out, and that gets done much more thorough because if you're just doing the pan service, you only change the fluid that's in the pan.
Let's say for example, your transmission has a capacity of 12 quarts. If you're dropping the pan, you're only getting about 3 quarts out of it, so you're basically diluting the dirty fluid with clean fluid. It's better than doing nothing, but it's not nearly as thorough to doing a complete flush.
