Dr. George Best: Hello I'm Dr. George Best of Best Health and Wellness in San Antonio, Texas and this is part two of the answer of the question, why can't I lose weight? As we talked about in the first part, a large part of why most people can't lose weight is that they are eating too much of the wrong thing and in the last part we discussed how carbohydrate intake will sabotage your weight loss efforts because of the release of insulin.
In this part, I am going to talk about calorie restriction because this has been a kind of high monitored method of weight loss and that people will just try to drop their calorie intake really well and the concept being that if you don't take in a lot of calories and if you burn more calories than you take in then you will lose weight and onto the next step that is true, the problem is that as we talked about last time the type of calories you take in makes a big difference. But also if you restrict your calorie intake too much and or you exercise too hard or too often or for too long, you actually will sabotage your weight loss efforts.
The reason why is that when you drop your food and take your calorie intake down too low and or burning it really, really high and high number of calories to your exercise program, what will happen is that you will cause excess stress on the adrenal glands and some people who have probably heard of the adrenal glands by now because there is a lot that's discussed about cortisol which is an adrenal hormone that causes you to store fat around the midsection you know the belly fat that they talk about on commercials.
We see these products that are basically intended to help you burn that belly fat and the way they work is by stimulating the adrenals. Unfortunately those products typically contain stimulants that while they initially give the adrenals a boost what happens is they burn them out even further and in the long run they are going to causing you to gain back all the weight you lost and gain more making even harder for you to loose weight in long run.
Going back to calorie restriction, what happens is that when you reduce your calorie intake to a very, very low amount what happens is that the body starts to sense that it's basically goes into starvation mode. The body is very good at adapting to changing conditions under normal circumstances we and industrialized countries like United States we don't really have to worry about famine I mean even people who are looking at poverty usually set access to foods through things like food banks and that kind of thing. But in situations where there is true famine, this process of the body is actually for survival.
If you are in a situation where you had very low access to food and you are conditions you know you have to work hard just to survive then this is actually a type of reaction in the body. What happens is the adrenal start pumping out the cortisol. The cortisol causes you to store fat and what happens is that you store that fats so have an energy reserve under a lot of physical stress. So reducing your inner calorie intake well initially you will loose weight doing that what happens is that it causes reaction to start pumping out more cortisol and in the long run what happens is gaining more weight.
So, severe calorie restriction is not the answer. So, that explains why you can't lose weight even if you are cutting your calories to weigh weight down. This concludes part two of why I cant I lose weight or why cant I lose weight and I look forward to you talking to you on part three in which discuss the second half of the equation exercise. So thanks for watching.
