Dr. George Best: Hi, I'm Dr. George Best of best health and wellness in San Antonio, Texas and this is part 6 of my series, why can't I loose weight and then todays video I'm going to be discussing the next of the organ in gland type of interferences with your ability to loose weight and the one I'm going to discuss today is probably this the second most common one that we see and that is the thyroid type problems. There is a lot of people of out there, they are walking around with some clinical thyroid problems and lot of these people coming to when tested 2, 3, 4, sometimes more than that times and for there and if I thyroid rate is normal according to their more test.
And on the next plan why it is, they may still have a thyroid issue even though their voices are just normal and also why the thyroid is involved in also losing weight.. Thyroid types of weight in that position, typically you're going to gain rate all of your body that you are going to have weight gain in your arms, legs around your mid section, people actually can get fat of them around the back and the neck and shoulder area typically people who gain right although. And their different aspects of the thyroid and alcohol works as for as participating in weight problems. Thyroid hormone and when thyroid hormone is working properly is a fat burning hormone, so most people when they have problems with weight gain it ends the way to the thyroid it is gaining weight all over its because they are not getting adequate function from there thyroid hormone and that's distinction I'm going to make is that -- it is a problem of thyroid hormone function.
Not necessarily of thyroid hormone levels, which is -- test is blood in levels of thyroid hormone, so let me explain the different aspects of that. If you blood test, one of the things that you will see on a thyroid blood test is something called TSH and that stands for Thyroid-stimulating hormone. Thyroid-stimulating hormone is produced by the pituitary gland, which is a pure in the brain and it's from the pituitary gland is part of the brains control over various hormones. The master control system is I control that gland in the brain called hypothalamus and the hypothalamus in turn controls the pituitary and the pituitary in turn controls many of the glands by means of various stimulating hormones. In this case thyroid stimulating hormone, so when the biceps is unique for additional thyroid hormone it send a signal and the pituitary will releases thyroid stimulating hormone.
Thyroid stimulating hormone goes to thyroid gland, thyroid gland produces a hormone known as T4, which will see on the blood test. T4 is kind of the storage or inactive form of some thyroid hormone, T4 circulates the blood comes to liver as we talked about in earlier video delivers and important on all of the -- hormones and in case of thyroid hormone the liver converts T4 which is inactive to T3 which is active thyroid hormone. The T3 hormone then circulates the blood to all the major cells of volume. That happens when you don't get adequate T3 function again on that service came as T3 level, when you don't get anterior pituitary function is all the major cells of the body , don't get a full effect of thyroid hormone, that is effect or when the thyroid hormone hits the cells what it does is a triggers a process in the cells where they create more of these little organelle, what they called Organelles which are organs inside cells basically they create Organelles they are called mitochondria.
Mitochondria are like little energy factory they taken the calories and they create energy from these calories so they burn calories for energy and so when the T3 hits the cells, its sends a message to the cell to produce more mitochondria, more mitochondria you have more calories you burn the more energy you have so when there is breakdown in the system of course you gain weight but you also tend to get product to -- producing as my energy -- little thing that make happen as you may develop comes with your skin, hair and nails because they require a fair amount of energy to reproduce so lot of people will thyroid hormones to straight to develop issues with the a skin, hair and nails as well.
So what can go wrong here, well first of all TSH may mot reach the thyroid there may be some kind of problem methadone receptors on thyroid so it may not stimulating that T4 production usually that will show up on with this and that's are usually to -- give you for that and there may be some other things that would work better, in my opinion that's what they do in I'm -- for it now and so TSH receptors are working on you don't produce not T4 but use common blood test. T4 goes to liver should be converting into T3. Now there is a difference between a quantity of T3 and a quality of T3. On a blood test its going to measures a quantity of T3, so T4 is going to liver, liver is converting into T3 shows up on the blood test and if the conversion is going in that adequate rate and you have adequate T4 you should get acuity T3 on your blood test, problem is that's sometimes the quality of T3 is lacking its delivers been over loaded so it may not work quite as good as a high-grade of T3, you kindly think of in terms of regular gas versus premium gas.
So next cell T3 has to go to the cells, well her is where a lot of times things go wrong, T3 can be blocked at receptor sites at the cells. Most common thing that blocks is synthetic oestrogens for those T4 on birth control or on hormone replacement therapy is going to be big part of the problem. I'm going to discuss that more on the next prior series when we talk about are varying in an oestrogen contribution of weigh gain. All right in terms of thyroid hormones specifically oestrogen especially synthetic oestrogens can block those receptor sites so that T3 hormone can send its message to cells to produce more mitochondria and therefore you don't produce that eukaryotic mitochondria you don't product produce eukaryotic calorie burning and you don't produce that energy.
There is one more step in the process if the T3 is hitting the cells and you can get eukaryotic function of the T3 something can go wrong inside the cells and that is you can block the production of mitochondria through various chemical. One of those is so venerated and so venerated is an extremely common fluid eukaryotic, you find the things like showed those any type of process, snack foods those types of things very, very common they can blocks the production of mitochondria so that's the other aspect of it and sometimes you have to address that problem.
If you fall to the diet and our recommendations are usually get people, you will eliminate all the process food anyway but lot of people went to diet sodas, check the label you may find sodium benzyl in there. If you do you may want to switched somewhere else and that may make a big difference in your weight loss efforts, so that covers the thyroid pretty well and that's what I'm willing to stop up on today. The next video I'm going to discuss oestrogen impact on weight loss a little bit further it so stay tuned for that part and I'm really sign off for now. Thank you for watching.
