Instruction are easy to follow, but with a gas water heater, it is necessary to turn off the gas first?

I'm guilty! My "new" gas heater tank is 12 years old and I'v never flushed it. I'm trying to now, but there is a lot of sludge that is plugging off the drain hose. Can I dump some descaler into the cold feed at the top to loosen up the scale? And can I use low pressure compressed air to pressure up the tank to help blow the stuff out?

How to Maintain a Hot Water Tank

How many times have you really went down into the basement or into the furnace room and maintain the hot water tank? Now I know some folks will say what do you mean by maintaining a hot water tank I mean what does it require? It heats the water and that is all it does. Well it does do a lot more than that when you think about it, first of all it accepts cold water in from the main line into the hot water tank which goes down under the tank and fills the tank from the bottom. But, down on the bottom is the heater in this happens to be a gas fired hot water tank. So, therefore that heater now with the burner underneath it makes the water hot up to the temperature that is required for the domestic usage. Now, with that cold water coming in to the tank there is a lot of residual comes in. It could be sand, could be silt, it could be from flushing out the water lines in the local community but all that ends up in the bottom of a hot water tank because it is heavier and it sinks to the bottom. Hot water tanks do require maintenance beyond that of just inside. Here, is where you maintain a hot water tank in that is a valve which is a faucet that will accept the same thread as your outside land hose. So, I am going to get the land hose and we will adapt it on and I will show you exactly what I mean. Now, I got my garden hose here and I am going to use a quick connect. Now, the quick connects are very handy in fact you can buy them at your local hardware building supplies center but they just snap in and we are ready to go. Now, I take the quick connect and I am going to put it into the valve. Tighten and snap on the garden hose, now all I have to do is turn the valve on and that is now going to feed water out through the garden hose to the laundry cab. That rusts that build up, you got to get ready of that because if you do not get ready of that that is impeding the from giving the efficiency of the gas which you are burning to keep that domestic hot water warm. So, once it is running clear, normally takes about 12 liters of water now that will run clear.
