The purpose of a wick is to set the candle in flame and to sustain that flame. Whether candles are scented or decorative, spiritual or functional, a wick is essential to effectuating the burning of wax. Fashioning a good wick is absolutely the most important step of the candle making process. To create a wick for your own candle, you will need 48 hours and materials. A spool durable string or yarn, wax, a pouring pot, a pot larger than your pouring pot. A mixing bowl, salt, boric acid, wax paper, water, a cup, a thermometer, a spoon, a hand towel, a table spoon, access to a stove preferably an electric one.
First preparation, one tablespoon of salt, two tablespoons of boric acid, and a cup of water into a mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly using the spoon. Second, unfurl your spool of string and cut three strips, each a minimum of four inches longer than the height of your desired candle. Soak the three strips of durable string in your mixture for 12 hours or so. Third, after allowing the strips to dry, braid them traditionally. Fourth, prepare a double boiler set up by filling the larger of you two pots with an inch or two inches of water, set the larger pot on your stove heat the water to percolation.
Fill the pouring pot with wax and place it within the larger pot of boiling water, make certain to monitor the wax using a thermometer. When the wax reaches its desired temperature it is time to prime the wick. To prime the wick, you must dip the saturated lengths of rope into a bowl of melted wax. Provide it in ample coating even allow the wax to soak free into its pores. After removing the wick from the wax, pull it taut and lower it into water for several seconds. Then lay it out on a piece of wax paper for thirty seconds to a minute. Repeat until the wick is stiff to your liking. And that is how you fashion a wick.
