How to Make an Oaxacan Foil Animal Part 3
Sketch your animal on a piece of sketch paper. When your sketch is complete, roll out and cut a piece of tooling foil big enough to cover the entire drawing. Lay the tooling foil on top of the newspaper. The newspaper adds cushion and will help transfer your drawing onto the foil. Place your drawing on top of the foil. Using a pencil, trace heavily over the lines of your drawing. Be careful not to move your sketch.
When you finished tracing, lift your drawing off of the foil. Your sketch should have transferred onto the foil. If you want to have parts of your animals stick out, you’ll need to trace those the second time separate from the original tracing. Trace over all of your lines again, this time, directly on the foil.
Cut out the shape of your animal as well as any additional shapes such as wings or claws. To create indentations in your animal, push on the front with the pencil. To pop areas out, press on the back. Be sure to always work on the top of your pad of newspaper. Once you’re finished adding details and texture to your animal, add color with permanent markers. Attach details with the hot glue gun. If you’d like, you can fashion a hanger out of tooling foil and add that with the hot glue as well. Enjoy!
