We’re here to make some books. We’ve got several different kinds of books that you can make at home. All you need is some paper, scraps of wallpaper, wrapping paper, construction paper and you can even go so far as to make some of your own paper and all you need is a blender and some water and a little wooden screen, a little wooden frame with some screening across it. Anyway, we’re going to start with a little miniature book that actually follows this little diagram here and a 9 X 12 sheet of paper or even just a piece of computer paper is perfect to make this little miniature book.
So first, we need a fold that just goes vertically right down the center of the piece of paper. Then I’m going to fold this piece of paper in half, just like this. And then I’m going to fold it in half one more time so that when I open it up, I actually have 8 equal boxes. Now, you’ll notice on this diagram that the dotted lines represent folds and the straight lines represent a cut, so you’re going to need to fold this halfway—fold it in half and then you are going to cut down that center fold through the first box and stop at the second box. Okay, so here you have exactly what this diagram shows you—you’ve got your folds going this way and your cut down the center. Now the idea is to hold this up like this and you’re going to push this together. They’re going to come together in the center like a little Merry-Go-Round and line up your folds like this and then you close it like this. Probably the most difficult thing is just getting the folds right. Now, if you wanted to, you could actually make several of these and then glue the pages, so you’d have a book with more pages. Right now we basically have a book that’s going to have 1,2,3,4,5,6 pages and then on the outside, we’re going to create a cover but you certainly could fold another piece of paper, glue those together and then you’ll have 12 pages. Now, what I’m going to do is I’m going to take a piece of tag board which is slightly heavier than paper and it’s a little bit heavier than construction paper but its certainly not as heavy as poster board and what I want to do is take some quick measurements of my book. It is 5 ½, 4 1/4. So I’ve got 5 ½ X 4 ¼ and what I want to do is make certain that I’m giving a little extra space all the way around the pages of the book so that when the book closes the pages aren’t going to pop out the edges. And it will give you some space for putting a cover over your book and this method of covering your—creating your cover for your book is used on this style, it’s used on this one and it’s even used on this—just to some extent because you’d always want it to be slightly bigger than your pages.
So, I’m just going to add a little bit more to my 5 1/2. I think I’m going to go to about 6 ¼ and whenever you measure you have to do it in two places. I have students who think that if you just put one little dash mark there— that that’s going to be enough and then they lay their ruler down and they wonder why it’s not straight. And then I’m going to change directions and add—I’ll make this 4 7/8. Just line those two up. And then I’m going to cut this out—six so— and I think I’m going to use some leopard. So I’m going to take my cover here and I’m going to lay this down. We’re going to use the Trustee old glue stick and I’m just going to put glue all over the tag board and it’s a little lumpy but that’s okay. You just use your finger and spread it out. We’re going to put this down on here and leave a little bit of space all the way around or a little over half inch because then what I’m going to do is cut this out.
