Mary: Hey guys! Welcome to TMI weekly. Today, I’m here with Kara Ackerman of Kara Ackerman Designs. I’m wearing one of her beautiful pieces and I’m sure you’ll see some of them in her studio. Thanks so much for having us.
Kara: It’s my pleasure. Thank you for coming.
Mary: So, you are going to help us with some DIY Jewelry on our recessionista budget, right?
Kara: Yes.
Mary: So, let’s have some of your signature piece.
Kara: This is called the Talulah Chain and we do a variety of different ribbons and basically you can come in, mix and match, what colors you like and we’ll do it together.
Mary: White, I think.
Kara: So let’s do white. Basically, you can go anywhere and get some Grosgain ribbon, do a little stitch, known to have to do with stitch.
Mary: Their stitching involved—wait a minute, this is getting too complicated.
Kara: I’m telling you, you don’t have to do it. It’s not a big deal. Nobody knows how to sew anymore.
Mary: Isn’t that shame?
Kara: Yes, unfortunately. So basically, it’s a yard of ribbon, very easy, put it through, super simple. You can play with it.
Mary: Now this is your signature chain but obviously you could choose your chain of choice.
Kara: So this is like a broken chain and you can always spread it through here and you don’t have to do it as fancy as this.
Mary: It’s perfect.
Kara: That’s all you have to do, put it on.
Mary: And then you’ve lined a little bow technique.
Kara: You can show me yours. I’ll show you mine.
Mary: Okay.
Kara: How’s that?
Mary: It’s silk.
Kara: Like that.
Mary: Perfect.
Kara: And that’s it you don’t even have to sew it if you don’t want it to.
Mary: Okay, so this is great. Now where would one find chain like as fancy as this?
Kara: You can actually find it in fabric store, no lot of dollar stores. They have things for curtain rides.
Mary: Right.
Kara: Fun things like that.
Mary: Alright, so just keep your eyes open.
Kara: Exactly.
Mary: See what you like and then don’t be just make a grimace and say “Oh, this is for your shower curtain.” Just go for it.
Kara: Nobody knows the difference. This will mend your broken heart.
Mary: Oh.
Kara: Everybody is looking to reinvent stuff that they already have. You don’t even have to go very far to find in your jewelry box. Broken pieces, a brooch, loose stones, this actually came from a dollar store.
Mary: Okay.
Kara: And you can take a wire, take a brooch. So I loved that, take some ribbon and this is a broken earring. It’s actually was my great grandmother’s and then we could just a little knot and voila, we can tie it around simple like this
Mary: Oh, that’s so cute.
Kara: Or there is a way to make a clasp with thread. You take two pieces. Put one over the other. You knotted over this.
Mary: Okay, so two knots and they slip.
Kara: Yep.
Mary: So then there’s no guessing. You know when you like tied around.
Kara: Yeah, so you could just put it over your head and slip it to where you want it.
Mary: Exactly, fun trick, perfect.
Kara: And hopefully this will mend your broken heart.
Mary: Oh, if only we’re that easy Kara. That’s a great trick either you need more fun to acting on a.
Kara: This is a regular polishing cloth. This is an old piece of silver that’s probably been sitting around. So here is something in terms of a bracelet that we could do as well since everything is coming up ribbons lately.
Mary: It’s true there are lots of ribbons. I mean Julia just must be thrilled. Julia loves silver and bows, don’t you, honey?
Kara: So, get again. You can do something fit it like this and--
Mary: And then have a bow hanging off the other side.
Kara: You can have a bow hanging off the other side. This is a great thing to do with the piece of jewelry that’s one cool.
Mary: It’s basically about thinking outside the box.
Kara: Right.
Mary: It just gives you an excuse to go shopping and like that you are at the store and have little fun, dig around and play.
Kara: You can make jewelry for $5.00 to $10.00.
Mary: So are they.
Kara: It has a great look to it.
Mary: Well, thank you so much recessionista style has become one of my favorite new things and this has been helpful little instructions. So, thanks so much.
Kara: Thank you for coming, my pleasure.
Mary: Have a wonderful day! I hope you guys learned something out there and we’ll see you soon on tmiweekly.com, bye.
