Hi! We’re here to make some fun things this morning. We’re going to be using some foam material.
It actually comes in sheets, it comes in various colors, and if you go to your local craft store, you should be able to find it without any problem. Also, you need to know that even if you can’t find this foam there are other substitutes you can use. You could use construction paper or you know wrapping paper glued on to a sheet of tag board or whatever you could find. You could even use sheets of just cardboard to make puppets and to make these fans. And I’ve got half of the fan made here and we’ll make the other half in front of you and then put it together. And we also have these nifty little puppets here that you can get a bunch of kids together in the neighborhood and you could put on little puppet show, write a little skit, make all your characters and it would be a really fun activity for a morning or an afternoon.
What I did was I went to the computer and on the internet I went and did an image search and I found two animals that I wanted to work from. And I’m going to make a teddy bear puppet and then I’m going to put an owl on the back of my fan which already has a lady bug on it. And those are the two foam projects we’re going to do. So, I’ve got my bear here and I might go ahead and I’m going to make—because I want my puppet to be a little bit smaller, I’m going to have to draw this bear just to have it smaller.
So, on a piece of paper I’m just going to go ahead and quickly sketch my little bear upside down and there’s its tummy and this is its other part and okay. So, there we’ve got our little teddy bear. And what I’m going to do is I’m going to go ahead and just cut him out because that way it’ll be a lot easier for me. I can just trace around him on the foam and then cut him out and then we can cut out the little pieces that are in to get glued on top of them.
Don’t think that you can draw things that detailed you know, you can make all different kinds of animals out of a simple shapes, just circles and triangles and squares and rectangles and combinations of those. Well, the puppets can be people, they can be animals. So here’s our bear, it’s a little bit smaller and I think it’ll be a good size to go with the walrus and the fish and now we just have to pick a color for our bear. So why don’t we do a blue bear.
So, I’m going to trace around my bear and it doesn’t have to be perfect. This will give us a good outline and then we can put his little paws on and we can cut out a bow from another color and there we go. So we’ve got the bear here and the easiest way to cut this out is just to cut the whole section out so that you don’t have to mess with all of that extra material and then you’re just going to go ahead and cut out your bear. So here’s our bear and I’m just going to go ahead and cut out the front part of his face. And I think I’m going to go ahead and I’ll decorate him with yellow and we’re just going to trace around his nose and I’m going to cut that out. Then I’m going to pout his nose right about there. And let’s see, we could use a little black, give him two little eyes.
Now, I’m going to go ahead and do the little paws. He needs a paw down here or the pad for his paw. We’ll cut out a little shape to go inside of his ear right there. And then we just need one more and then we’ll work on his bow. Let’s just draw a bow. Or if you want it to be kind of different you could just get a ribbon and tie it and go ahead and hot glue a ribbon on to you know, you may tie a bow and then go ahead and hot glue it down on him, that would work too. And there we’ve got our little bow and I’ll turn it that way so you don’t see the pencils lines.
Now, to put these extra lines in here you could take one of your paint pens or a sharpie and go ahead and draw those lines on their which we’ll do in a few minutes. But now, we’re going to need to hot glue this items on here because then we have to make a back to the puppet. And the hot glue gun is perfect for this again, glues his nose. So there we’ve got the one side of the bear but we also need to do a back side.
Now, when you’re getting ready to cut out the second bear you’re going to trace around him and you really need to put the two of them together so that you don’t end up putting the decorations on the wrong side of the bear.
And what I want to do now is go ahead and put the lines on the bear. We need to line up here on his ear and we need his other paw and let’s see, we need the rest of his body and then what we’re going to do, same thing, I’m going to glue that down and then we’re going to put the bear on top of there and then we definitely need some hot glue to hold this pieces together. And then to pull the spider webs off again and you have your puppet. And then we are ready to do a puppet show with Mr. Bear, Mr. Walrus and the fish. So have fun with your puppet show.
