Hi, James Wetmore here with another mobile bartending tip of the week. And in this one, I want to talk a little bit about the issue of tipping. Now if you have ever bartended at a bar or restaurant you might be like me where the real reason I became a bartender was because of the tips. I knew that I was getting a salary based rate but if I worked harder, if I have busy shifts and I gave 110% effort on my service, I was going to get bigger tips and tat would add Miami.
The same thing is true for mobile bartender. You get to choose your rate for showing up. You know it could be $150.00 to $200.00 just to get at the door then you get expect a gratuity on top of that. Now the issue I get into with my students is they don’t know whether they should have a tip here on the bar or if the host should supply a—for you at the end of the night.
Now here is the deal, this is your business. You're the boss. So guess what, you get to make the rules. Here are the rules I suggest you make for your business. Two options that you give your client. They must tip you so they have two ways to tip you either a tip jar on the bar or a host to gratuity. Now some people will not like that tip jar on the bar so they’re going to say “yeah, let’s do a host in gratuity. I'll pay you afterwards”. So if you just put that tip jar on the bar and you give 110% effort, people are going to be tipping you throughout that night. I can guarantee you that and you're getting a great income.
The other option is you know no problem, we will do a tip jar, we will do host to gratuity and then the client will have to pay you on top of the wage they paid you to get the door. And they go “how much is host to gratuity?” here is the rule of thumb. Here is a secret. You say “the average tip for host to gratuity is $1.00 to $2.00 per guest. Okay, so you're at a 100 person party, you're getting an additional $100.00 and $200.00 tip. And you go “hey, that’s not enough for me”, you make up your own rule. Say it's average to $3.00 per guest but you need to tell that to your client upfront before the party. Be clear on your rules so that you can get hat gratuity as well.
There you go wit your tip of the week. I'm James Wetmore of bartendforprofit.com and I'll see you all next time. Take care.
