Heidi: Interested in learning how marble soap is made? Hi, my name is Heidi, and you’re watching WatchMojo.Com. And today, we’re taking a look at how soap making meets the art of homemade.
Alicia: When we’re making soap, we’re working on something called Sodium Hydroxide, that’s commonly referred to as lye or caustic soda, so we have to wear gloves and we have to wear protection for eyes as well. I use a face shield.
To make the solution, I took a measurement of water and I need the sodium hydroxide which is a powder into that water. Now, we’re going to measure up the oils into a bucket. I’m working on a pretty large scale, and I measured my first oil which is olive oil. The next oil that I’m going to put in is coconut oil. Now that I’ve finished measuring the majority of my oils, I’m going to put them in a pot to heat them and to melt the coconut oil that is completely liquid.
The next one I’m measuring is castor oil which is a bean. Now, I’m going to use the same bowl to measure my sea butter. While waiting for the lye to cool down and the oils to warm up, I’ve prepared these other ingredients that are going to go in the soap. This is black iron oxide which is used as the black coloring of the soap. Titanium dioxide is used to make white. These are the essential oils I’m using and what’s floating on top is a vitamin E, and this is white clay. The white clay makes the soap basically more white and more pale.
This oil, I’m now going to pour that in the bucket. Now, I’m going to take the lye, it’s cooled down, and then I’ll put it into the oil and then I’m going to start stirring. It’s at this point that I’m going to add the white clay.
The next phase is for me to—the same thing I did with the clay and the pigment. I’m going to add my sea butter now. At the same time, we’re going to put our essential oils in. I’m going to put more into the colors and I then I want to split this into the two molds.
So this is the fun part. This is where we marble the colors. I’m going to pour slowly in various directions and ways. And the very last thing that I do before I cover it up. I’m going to take out the spatula and make the colors. In four or six weeks, this two bags of soap will about 112 of this soap.
