How to Make Pie Pastry Dough

Pulse for about two seconds to mix all the dry ingredients together. Next, add a quarter cup of butter that is well chilled and a tablespoon of well chilled shortening. Pulse three to four times for two to three seconds each time, until it's crumbly. Then in a small bowl blend one egg yolk and two tablespoons of water. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the flour mixture and pulse two to four times, for two to three seconds each time, until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the bowl and clings together. Now, remove the dough, cover and chill for a ½ an hour. Make sure you flour your work surface and rolling pin when working the dough.
