How to Make a Pita Bread
This flat bread is traditionally found in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Hi, I am Rebecca Brayton and welcome to WatchMojo.com. And today, we will be showing you how to make pita bread.
So for this recipe, you will need three cups of all-purpose flour, 1½ teaspoon of salt, one tablespoon of sugar or honey, two teaspoons of yeast, 1¼ to 1½ cups of room temperature water and two tablespoons of olive oil.
First step, combine the yeast with the sugar, salt and flour, we are using quick rise yeast.
Next, add the olive oil and about a cup and a quarter of the water and stir with the wooden spoon.
This mixture should form into a ball but if you find it’s too dry, slowly add more water until the mixture sticks together. Once your dough is the right consistency, place it on your work surface and knead for 10 minutes.
Once that it is done, roll your dough into a ball. Pour about a teaspoon of oil in a mixing bowl and roll your ball dough through the oil making sure its surface is completely covered.
Leave the dough in a bowl and cover it with a damp towel leaving it to rise until it is doubled in size. This should take about an hour and a half.
Once it’s risen, punch down the dough and divide it into eight pieces. Now, roll these pieces into balls and cover them with a damp towel and leave them to rest for 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. At this point you should also put in upside down cookie sheet in your over to work as your cooking surface.
Once the dough has rest in, flour your work surface and roll each of the balls to about a quarter inch thick.
Once the oven is preheated, place as many as you can on your upside down cookie sheet.
For soft Pita’s, cook for about three minutes. For more brown and crispy pitas, cook for six to eight minutes.
Pita bread is great when served with a dip such as homes or you could even try making it into a sandwich.
