This video of bartending lesson is brought to you by American Bartenders School where in just one or two weeks you could be fully trained and ready to work as a professional bartender.
The drink that I’m going to show you how to make now is called the Manhattan. At one time, Manhattans were almost as popular as Martinis. However, as the drinking public’s taste has changed, less toward whiskey, much more toward vodka, in Manhattan has decreased in popularity. However, it’s still an interesting and very good before dinner drink especially if you like whiskey. Now Manhattans can be served either on the rocks or straight up just depending on an individual’s preference.
So I’m going to show you how to make Manhattan on the rocks. First thing we’re going to do is we’re going to take a rock glass and we’re going to fill it up with ice. And then what we’re going to use is sweet vermouth. Sweet vermouth is an infused red wine which means that different things are added to it to increase the alcoholic strength, brandy sometimes, sugar, various herbs and bonicles that will give it a unique flavor. And we’re going to put just a cup of dashes of our sweet vermouth here, it’s red in color, and then what we’re going to use is our whiskey. Here I have Seagram’s Seven Whiskey, interesting whiskey, popular and we’re going to use two ounces of our whiskey. There we go.
Now with this particular drink, the Manhattan, we always want to put our vermouth in first. It’s because of the sugar content, it’s heavy more than your regular liqueur and it has a unique flavor to it so we want to put it on the bottom. Most customers find it a little strong to drink straight. We’re going to put a sip stick in it. Whenever we have ice in our drinks, we’re going to put a sip stick and also with our Manhattan, we’re going to add a cherry. Now this is a sweetened cherry right here, it’s called the maraschino cherry. It’s all sweetened, it’s not a fresh cherry and it’s very sweet and we usually will use cherries as a garnish or maybe a little bit of a snack for people with any drinks that have a particular sweet flavor to it.
So here we have it, our Manhattan, named after that famous island in New York. Manhattan, Enjoy it.
