There are a lot of people wondering how to pick and choose dishes for dinner, when you invite people to your place or even going out to a restaurant. How would you go about choosing the right amount of dishes when planning a dinner for two, four, six or even eight people?
For two people dinning at a table, I would suggest to choose two entree, one like with meat and one seafood dish. If you party like a more balanced meal, you can pick one meat or seafood dish and one vegetable dish. An example selection of dishes for two people would be beef with tea pot and shrimp with lobster sauce.
A meal of four people would be a choice of three different entrée such as one meat dish, one vegetable dish and one seafood dish. Here is a suggested list of the dishes, kum pao chicken, stir-fry lotus root with cloud ears, dry fry shrimp with shell. For six people dinning together, you can have three entrée, a soup and appetizer. Three entrée can be one meat, one vegetable and one seafood dish. A meal could include spicy eggplants, beef hoisin sauce and shrimp with walnut and black vinegar sauce, subgum soup and spring rose.
And with eight people, would have four entrée, a soup, an appetizer and a desert. The four entrée can include two meat dishes, one vegetable and one seafood. A suggested meal might be bittermelon with beef, live lobster Cantonese, chicken with walnut, yard long beans with onions, hot and sour soup, crab ragoons and laced bananas.
Okay, to summarize the number of dishes and type of dishes when preparing a meal for two people, we’ll serve two entrees. For four people, we will serve three entrees. If we have six people, we’ll serve three entrees, one soup and one appetizer. And finally, four eight people in a meal, we will serve four entrees, one soup, one appetizer and one dessert. As you can see, we keep adding dish, an appetizer or desert as the party grows larger.
