We’re going to be making a little fish, and the materials you’re going to need for this are going to be some self-hardening clay, and some clay tools, if you actually have access to them or simple kitchen tools always work really well, some news paper, a cup of water, and after everything is dry, we’re going to use some acrylic paint and some paint pens to do our decorating.
So, first thing I'm going to do is take some of this clay, and I'm going to cut off a little section about an inch or so, and I actually have a clay-cutting tool here that you can buy up on the store or you can use just a simple piece of wire. If you have some in the garage maybe, or a pipe cleaner or even a knife works well, but be careful with knives.
I'm going to take this piece of clay, and I'm going to flatten it out into a circle because what we’re going to do is we’re actually going to make like a little taco, I call this my taco fish because we’re going to be forming something that looks very much like a taco.
So first thing I have to do is get this clay flattened into the shape of a circle. So I'm going to do a little pressing and pulling here. And eventually, I’ll smooth this out but this is going to be like my big fat tortilla. And then we’re going to shape that into a taco. And the filing of the taco is going to be this piece of news paper here.
Then it really needs to be a little bit bigger. So I'm going to keep pressing it. Now, I think we’re ready to crumble up the paper, and I’ll only use half a sheet of some newspaper and then I'm going to lay the piece of paper here. And then I’ll bring up the edges of the taco. So, see now I actually have a little taco formed, and I'm going to pinch the top of it together, because this is going to be the top fin of the fish. One end is going to be shaped into its tail, and then the other end is going to become his mouth.
So right now, I'm just going to kinda pinch a big fin on top of this body and let’s see. I think we’ll make this side his mouth and I think for that, I'm going to take a little bit more clay. And I'm actually going to add some on here, because I want to do this big lips here, so I'm going to take the clay and I'm going to roll a little coil here, and see if that’s going to fit, that’s as pretty good.
I'm going to wrap this around the opening of his mouth and join it together here. And you have to make sure when you add something to clay that you smooth where it’s been joined. So it’s not enough to fall off at the later point. And a lot of this work you can actually do with your fingers. Clay is a fun medium to work in if you like to get your hands dirty. I'm also going to have to smooth on the inside here, since you’ll be able to see inside the fish’s mouth, you want to make sure there’s a nice and smooth edge here.
So there’s our fish now. You can always kind to come back later and pinch it. You could even change the shape of it if you wanted to go like this to it, because clay is pretty easy to make changes with or you could squeeze it in this way, okay, and make big you know, kind of wide-open fish lips. But I think, what we’ll do is we’ll just kind to leave them maybe, we’ll leave them like this. So it has a kind of a flat lower lip, okay
And then I've got some extra clay here, so I think I’ll go ahead and put his eyes on this long as we’re at that end of the fish. Then I'm going to roll-up to little balls of clay and trying making them about the same size. I'm going to flatten one side of them because those are going to go on his body like right about here.
