How to Do Bushcraft at Home
One of my favorite things about Bushcraft is that it encompasses so much more than just wilderness survival scales. As Bushcrafters we’re trying to reconnect the traditional scales of our ancestors and learn how they solve problems and made the things that they needed. And one of the best ways to do this I think is to break the habit of immediately jumping in the car and running to the store every time we need something and to illustrate what I'm talking about I'm going to make a decorative fence out of some sticks and some natural twine. Let's give it a try.
Okay, so first we’re going to make the post. Point the end of one of your sticks and with your knife pound the next in, push the top with the stick like that. Okay, so now you're going to take your knife and we’re going to cut out the sides of the “X” to form an hour glass shape and use the push cuts and push away from this so that you don’t cut your hand.
Next you're going to mark your horizontal branch where it connects to your post and give it the same hour glass treatment. So when you put them perpendicular to each other like this they are like together very, very strong.
Next, we're going to put all this together. Now you only have to notch every other horizontal post because it’s going to get its strength on the one that is notch. So to latch all this together we’re going to use what's called the Transom hitch and if you can't follow along with what I'm doing here you can find it in any knot book.
So basically I'm going to take the string and I'm going to make an “X” across the post like this and then I'm going to take the string underneath like so and I'm going to take the working end and I'm going to pass it underneath this part of the hitch and pull it up and then I'm going to take it behind the very top string like that and pull it tight. And now what I'd like to do is add another little knot on top there for extra security. Now you can take your knife and just trim the edges however you’d like and that’s it.
Okay, I hope you’ve enjoyed that project there something you see that no matter where you live you can apply your Bushcraft skills. So thanks for watching and I hope to see you again.
