This video of bartending lesson is brought to you by American Bartenders School where in just one or two weeks you can be fully trained and ready to work as a professional bartender.
The drink I want to show you now is called an Alabama slammer. If you like the taste of orange juice, it’s got a lot of great flavors in it.
Now what I’m going to use is I’m going to use my Boston shaker which consists of two parts a metal mixing cup and a glass mixing cup. And I’m going to put a little bit of ice in our Boston shaker and our recipe calls for a half ounce of Southern Comfort. Southern Comfort is a sweet whiskey taste liqueur, it’s flavored with peaches, it’s a secret recipe so I can’t tell you exactly what goes into it. So we got a half ounce of our southern comfort. We have a half ounce of our amaretto liqueur. This happens to be Amaretto di Saronno which comes from Italy but there are other distillers that make amaretto flavored. It’s just an almond-flavored liqueur. And we’re going to use a half ounce,
Our next recipe ingredient calls for sloe gin. Sloe gin is a sweet liqueur that’s made from the sloe berry. It’s red in color. Now even though it has the word “gin” in it, it really doesn’t taste anything like gin and I’m going to put a half ounce in here.
Now I know that some of you people out there who are watching this recipe on the internet say, “well I saw the recipe and it calls for one ounce of sloe gin and two ounces of this and three ounces of this liqueur” and the reason why we don’t show you how to make drinks with those outrageous proportions is because if you drink one of those drinks you’d be drunk in about ten minutes and if you went out and drove a car, at least here in the United States, you’d be arrested and put in jail. So all of our drinks have a moderate amount of liqueur in so that they taste good and they still have a little bit of effect on you.
The last ingredient that we’re going to put on our drink is just orange juice. We’re going to put two ounces of our orange juice in there. And then what I’m going to do is I’m going to shake this drink and the reason why I’m going to shake this drink instead of pouring all the ingredients in this glass is whenever you’re making a cocktail, and you’re using a fruit juice with liqueurs, you want to stir it up, you want to mix it up, you want to get everything. Oops! Lets hold it down, got to hold this tightly, so the drink will have a consistent flavor all the way through. And then I’m going to strain it without the ice. Look at that. All right so this is our Alabama slammer. So if you like orange juice, it’s a great tasty drink. So enjoy. It’s got a lot of interesting flavors in it, Alabama slammer.
