How to Make a Grilled Ham and Gruyere Sandwich
Now we have our nice crispy hot melty grilled ham and gruyere sandwich. Hi home schoolers Scot here with another Home School lunch. A while back on the podcast I talk about making a grilled cheese sandwich out of gruyere cheese. So now I have all the stuff here and I am going to show you how to do it.
You are going to need gruyere cheese, black forest ham, mustard, a little olive oil or butter, tarragon and bread. First let’s talk about the gruyere cheese, the gruyere cheese is like I am so fancy, I don’t come in slices. So we are going to have to shred the cheese up ourselves. I have my cheese grater here and a plate put your cheese shredder on the plate here like this. And then kind of shred the cheese and the next step is to mix in the tarragon. So get your measuring cup and measure out about one teaspoon of tarragon which is not that much.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when they are new to cooking is putting too much spice. You are almost bitter of putting little less and adding more spices later than putting too much spice. So that is about one teaspoon of tarragon and I am going to mix that with cheese. Make sure you wash your hands and kind of just mix that in there - so that is good. We are fancy-fancy, the hardest is done; we have our cheese and tarragon ready.
Then take two pieces of bread and now comes the fun and easy part. Put the two pieces of bread on the plate there. Then get a little bit of cheese for each one and spread that on there. And a little bit more of our cheese and tarragon mixed together - put it over here. Spread that out nice and then the next step is to put our black forest ham on to our sandwiches so I folded it in half and then put it in the middle there then take another piece because this is like big thin slices. I take one slice there; fold it in half like that and we put on the other one there.
Now if you really like yourselves some ham, you could double up on the ham. And you know what I think I just might - I am crazy like that. I am going to do a double ham - look at that, don’t tell anyone. This is more ham than the average person needs, it is a ham explosion. And the last and but not least is the mustard, take you two tops and put a little mustard on there.
And get your butter knife and kind of spread the mustard our nice on top here. The mustard adds a nice tangy flavor. So then you have the mustard spread out, flip the top over so the mustard is in the sandwich. The last step is to put them on the frying pan. Here I have my big flat cast iron grill and I have with a nice light coating of olive oil on it. So nothing sticks to it and I have the stove on medium heat, take your sandwich and put it there on the frying pan.
You can hear it sizzle and we want to cook for like two minutes. After about two minutes, use your spatula to flip over in your sandwich. Flip now, see now look how nice and golden brown that looks and it smells so good. This is yummy and once you flip it and then you have that side down, you want to smoosh it down to make a nice flat sandwich. I am going to use the bottom of my other frying pan.
I have washed the bottom of this frying pan, put that on there. Don’t push just let the weight of it push it down? And that way you are letting just to weigh of that so it is like a pressed sandwich. I want that cooked for like 45 seconds - and there we have our nice Grilled Ham and Gruyere Sandwich.
