Derrick: Welcome to Common Man Cocktails, I’m your host Derrick Schommer. And today, we’re going to create the Honolulu Lulu. That’s the name of this one. It’s Polynesian. I went to Polynesia.
Reinhardt: Are you sure?
Derrick: No.
Reinhardt: Good.
Derrick: But I think it’s Polynesian. It’s going to have some dark rum. Wait a minute! Stop! Who are you? You’re not normally there.
Reinhardt: You don’t know me?
Derrick: No. This is Reinhardt. He’s from Germany, not Austria. There’s a difference. There’s a border. So how are you doing?
Reinhardt: Fine, how are you?
Derrick: What is your favorite cocktail?
Reinhardt: The Honolulu.
Derrick: The Honolulu Lulu.
Reinhardt: Honolulu Lulu?
Derrick: Honolulu Lulu.
Reinhardt: Yeah. That’s what I mean.
Derrick: That’s your favorite cocktail?
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: So you already know what this tastes like?
Reinhardt: I have no idea.
Derrick: Okay. That’s good. Fine, he likes Minhunis just to let you know. So this is going to have dark rum, Frangelico for our Frangelico fans. We’ve got some light rum. This is the Flora and Cana Light rum. We’ve got a little Kalua so you get a little chocolaty, coffee, some pineapple juice, a little garnish, a couple of—a little lime juice here and some simple syrup. We’re going to introduce a little dash of simple syrup, like a tablespoon. But what I’m going to do, I don’t have to make a pitcher of this stuff so I’m just going to take all my ingredients and double them, otherwise, then I can only make a drink for you and then I can’t taste it and that’s no fun.
Reinhardt: It will be bad.
Derrick: Yeah, okay. So the trick is, will they all fit in here? Any bets?
Reinhardt: Definitely fit.
Derrick: Alright, we’ll see. It’s going to be tough. So we’re going to do an ounce and a half so that’s three. Somebody has got to tell me what’s going on. So we’re going to do an ounce and a half of dark rum. In this case, I’m just going to change it. Don’t you like these cool little stoppers they put on there so it doesn’t pour too fast? It stops the alcohol better. Did you know that?
Reinhardt: What happened to three?
Derrick: But I did three. I put three in there.
Reinhardt: No. It was more than three.
Derrick: This measures two.
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: So I did three. Three total. I’m done. And then we’re going to do- what? You don’t believe me?
Reinhardt: I believe you.
Derrick: Alright. Light rum, we’ll do two ounce of light rum instead of the standard one ounce because we’re making for two. I can do that. and we’re going to do two ounces of Frangelico because I’m making for two. So it’s like it would be one ounce but with math involved, it becomes one times two, you know. Okay, you’re with me? We’re on the same page.
Reinhardt: I’m with you.
Derrick: Alright. And then we’ll do—let’s do the pineapple juice because we’re going to need three ounces. So that my friend is six, two—this is going to be tight, four. Oh God! Five, six. Two ounces of lime juice. It does get really, really high. Do we put everything in? And then we’ll do a tablespoon or two. We’ll do about a half ounce of simple syrup. Honolulu Lulu, it’s pretty cool.
Reinhardt: Are you sure?
Derrick: Yeah. This is your favorite drink. And then where’s my glass? Throw that on there. Oh! We’re going to have a problem.
Reinhardt: It doesn’t fit.
Derrick: What are we going to do? We’ll scoop it all out. That’s the most professional thing to do, right? There we go. Are you ready for this?
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: It’s going to be ten times better than your little Scorpion Bowl. My ice is melting. You know why? It took too long to make a Scorpion Bowl one day.
Reinhardt: Yeah. With the slow Austrian.
Derrick: Yes, with the slow Austrian. So, we’re going to pour that in here. Hey, it’s green. That’s pretty cool. We’ll move this out of the way so you could see it. Now, you’re going to want to take this, squeeze it and drop it in. You can do it. I have no idea what this is going to taste like. So if you’ve never heard of a Honolulu, this is my first as well. Squeeze it, drop it in, you’re done. That is the Honolulu Lulu. That’s what it looks like and it’s better than a scorpion bowl. I don’t really know.
Reinhardt: Cheers.
Derrick: Cheers?
Reinhardt: Toast.
Derrick: Toast. Well, that has a wanky taste.
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: What is that? Always, it’s the Kalua. The Kalua and the Frangelica. It gives it like a peanut butter taste.
Reinhardt: Peanut butter? No.
Derrick: You’re not getting a peanut butter? That’s totally peanut butter.
Reinhardt: No, it’s coffee.
Derrick: Coffee, peanut butter-coffee. You’re not getting the hazelnuts? The whole—come on! They put a lot of work for this.
Reinhardt: It’s coffee. Sorry, it’s coffee.
Derrick: Okay. It’s coffee but it’s green. It’s got some pineapples. It’s got a little citrus, you get that little acidic citrus. So you get citrus, you get pineapple and you get coffee all in one, so that’s like a Polynesian coffee.
Reinhardt: I agree.
Derrick: I like it. Do you like it?
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: You’ll drink another one?
Reinhardt: It’s awesome.
Derrick: It’s wicked awesome. There you go. That is your Honolulu Lulu. This is my friend Reinhardt from Germany where they drink only Honolulu Lulus in Germany, right?
Reinhardt: Yeah.
Derrick: That’s the truth. I’m your host Derrick Schommer. We’re teaching you how to drink.
