In this clip on advanced billiards, I’d like to show you how to make jump shot in a game of pool. Let’s distinguish first between a legal and an illegal jump shot because almost any amateur can make a ball hop. It’s very common to see a new player actually try to scoop the ball, by picking it up and dropping the tip and scoop up so they can make a cue ball hop by scooping up. That would be an illegal jump shot in a game of pool.
What we’re actually trying to do to make a legal jump shot is elevate the back of the cue and strike down on the cue ball. When you do that, you’re actually forcing the cue ball into the bed of the table and making it jump up, making it hop on the table. Now to do that, we generally have specialized equipment. I’m showing you a couple of jump cues. These jump cues are generally 40-42 inches in length. They’re lighter, they may be 12-14 ounces rather than a 19-20 play cue. And for the most part, they will have very hard tips that have a very efficient transfer of the energy. This jump cue for instance has a phenolic resin tip. It’s made out of the same materials as the balls are made out of so it’s very hard. It transfers a lot of energy. The cue stick is shorter, lighter, it jumps out of the way very quickly and it makes it a lot easier to jump in a game of pool. So let’s take a look at this scenario over here.
If I’m playing in a game of 8-ball and my 8 ball is down there and my opponent has placed me in this terrible situation and put all of his balls right in front of mine. I may not have a good kick shot or to get around that ball so I’m going to take out my jump cue and see if I can hop over this mess balls and into the 8. Now to do this, I’m going to take my line of aim, I’m going to elevate the cue and this is how we make the jump shot.
