This video bartending lesson is brought to you by American Bartender School, from one of its simulated cocktail lounge classrooms where students all learn by doing just like on-the-job-training and in only one or two weeks they can be fully trained and ready to work as professional bartenders and take advantage of the many full and part time job opportunities available.
The drink I’d like to show you now is called a Gimlet. Now Gimlets can be made with either gin or vodka, they’re both clear liquors, they obviously taste a little different, but I’m here to show you how to make the Vodka Gimlet which is more popular today because people just drink probably nine times as much Vodka as they do Gin, but originally it was made with gin because vodka really didn’t become popular in the United States in 1950 and gin was drank way, way, way back before the depression.
Alright, so I’m going to show you how to make it straight up, so we’re going to use our stemmed cocktail glass, of course whenever we use our stemmed cocktail glass we’re making our drink straight up, we want to be sure to pre-chill it because once we pour that drink into this glass, it’s never getting any colder. So we’re going to put some ice in it just like that, little shot of water and that’s going to chill it on our glass, nice. And I’m going to show you how to shake this drink. On one of the lessons I showed you how to stir a drink, shaking a drink basically does the same thing, and what we’re doing is thoroughly mixing the ingredients up. So, we got a light glass mixing cup here, we’ve got our ice in there, we’re making a Gimlet, Vodka Gimlet so we’ll use our vodka; two ounce of our vodka. And then what we’re going to use is something called Rose’s Lime Juice. And Rose’s Lime juice is concentrated non-alcoholic sweetened lime syrup. So it’s actually a syrup and that was really originally developed in the 18th century in England, to prevent English sailors from having scurvy, which is a terrible disease when you don’t have any vitamin C. And you can kind of free-pour, we’re going to put about a half ounce of our Rose’s Lime juice in there, and now what we’re going to do is we’re going to shake this up, okay here we go, one, two three, four, five, six, shake it hard, get it nice and cold like this here we go, alright, okay. Alright, we’re going to dump this, here we go, and then we’re just going to kind of—there we go, a rocky gimlet, there we go, okay.
Then what we’re going to do is we’re going to give it some garnish. Here I have some quartered limes and I’m going to put some lime juice. Right there, I’m going to squeeze all that juice right in there, drop it right in there and there we have it, our Vodka Gimlet. Nice drink if you like vodka in kind of a lime flavor.
