Well here we are and I am really excited about teaching you how to make a mask like this Mardi-Gras Mask. I love masks, one of my favorite things to make when I’m teaching or just when I’m relaxing at home. So you’re going to need quite a few things to get started. you're going to need some tag board because we’re going to make the mask out of tag board. Okay you’re going to need some tissue paper, polymer medium or your gloss medium, couple water and some brushes and then for decorating, you can bring out the paint markers, you can bring out your ribbon, your glitter, your pipe cleaners, beads, buttons, feathers, whatever you want to add to you're creation
You also might want to get a hold of some kind of a stick it could be a doll rod from hardware store or sometimes people even go outside and just find yourself a nice stick peel off the bark in there you’ve got your little holder for your Mardi-Gras Mask. Of course you need a pair of scissors and a pencil for sketching some idea and some scrap paper for planning out the shape of your mask.
So here we go, we’re going to start and I kind of had an idea on my head that I’d like to do some kind of a cat-like mask and I’m going to use orange tissue paper. Basically my color scheme is going to be a lot of orange and black and yellow. And I think I’m going to use some black glitter somewhere and I don’t know we’ll think about decorating the doll rod later on maybe with tissue glitter or ribbons or whatever.
But first we need to get the shape of the mask sketched out here and basically what I’m going to do is, I’m going to kind of start with, kind of you know, runner the mill kind of those little mask with a elastic on them. But just basically you know kind of a long ranger type mask. Just so I can get things kind of centered because this would be what we’d cover, this would go over your nose and then this is the part that goes across here.
Then what I’m going to do is working from here then I can get some fur and some cat ears and probably I might want it to come up a little bit this way so that your own nose is not going to be, your mouth isn’t going totally be covered. Okay, now I kind of sketched out half of it and the reason why, is that if you want your mask to be symmetrical. Really all you need to do is draw half of it.
So here’s what I’m going to do. And while I’m cutting I think I may add a few things. There is always a bit time to make changes and you’ll notice that I really am making changes as I go which is fine. Okay, now we open this up and I think it’s wide enough to cover my face and it is symmetrical and there is one thing I do want to do, I want to slant the eyes and make them kind of slit like. And then way I’m going to do this is to fold this and then cut, there we go. This is just my pattern so it doesn’t have to be perfect. But I may need to use a utility knife on the good one.
Okay, now I can open this up, this can now become my pattern, okay, and I will go ahead and trace it. All right finish tracing now I need to cut this out carefully, okay. Okay, now we’ve got the eyes cut out here and let me if I have a big enough space, now we’ll just take a piece here because I want to make a little nose here, I doesn’t like the idea of three dimensional nose.
So what I do is I fold a piece of tag board in half and I’m going to cut half of the nose on the folded edge. Okay, so I’m drawing and what I’m going to do actually is pull a little tab on there so I can glue it and I will show you, so I can hot glue the tab to mask. Ones it’s all covered with tissue paper. Okay, so this would fold in like that and they would go on, on the mask like so.
So eventually that’s what’s going to happened with this nose, or we could even make it higher up like this so it becomes another point but we decide that later. So now what I’m going to work on next is covering everything with the tissue paper. And I’m just going to go ahead and I’m going to fold this orange up a couple of times. And just start cutting shapes that I can glue down.
