Today is going to be so much fun because we are going to make a mask, not a facial mask but this is going to be like a party mask, and I’ve never done this before but I know that I can do this and it’s going to be so easy and so much fun. So what we need to do is first to have the materials and what we need is this stuff and it’s a gauze coated plaster. It’s just this plaster roll you get in craft stores or you could actually go to medical supply place and get these too because they use to make cast out of this stuff.
All right and then you’re going to need want some Vaseline and you want something to put your hair back with. So I’m going to do this all myself and normally, you might want to do this when you have a subject that you can lay down but I’m going to do that myself. And then we’re going to need some Vaseline. So it slides up for our face. So there we go.
Next, what I want you to do is take your plaster and I want you to have like used strips that I bought 1x3 inches or so. And then we’re just going to dip it in the water get it all moist and we’re going to place across to our nose. Then you’re going to take another one, just dip it in the water and then we’re going to across that, perfect. And then it’s a simple as connecting everything else half of this. So we’re going to take another one, a little bit larger and put that across the forehead.
You just kind of want to connect the areas together and I have my scissors, and remember just cut your strips as you need them in the size you want. We’re going to build this face up with a few maybe three different layers. It’s kind of like putting a cast on your face and for me, I have had a cast on pretty much every part of my body except for my left arm.
So this is—really, it feels familiar to me in one more step. And you want to keep building those layers and creating your form. So now we have gotten this far. All we have to do is let this dry a little bit harden up. Now that I’ve done at least three layers and then when you feel those getting pretty solid, the couple of things you can do when you could smile a little big, when you just peel those things just pulling away from your face and you cannot tuck your fingers under gently. And then the whole thing can just eventually kind of—that wasn’t’ so bad.
Now I have my—a little mess and we had this harden up a little bit and then I’ll show you what else we can do to finish it of. All right so I’m back. My face is all cleaned up. I’ve got my mask and now we can finish this off in so many different ways. I’m kind of familiar in one thing we can do to this. You can build up structures like putting on some flexible cardboard that you can build up the nose or we can add pieces if we want to build wings or whatever. And this is also a good time to put on little pieces around the edges like the eye and then I’m going to fold it over so we have a really nice smooth edge around the eye.
And what if we wanted to make a mask where we could have the sticks so we can hold it like that instead of attaching it to our face. And if we want to attach this to our face, what we would do is we can make little holes in the plaster right down to attach a string. How we wanted to do it— okay I’m going to attach a stick. So here you can see I just cut some strips and then you get al l the pieces. And I’m just going to play around with this and what I’ve done is just take this on a cardboard and then I’m dipping my plaster wrap in there and then I’m kind of actually wrapping this thing up. And then after this is all wrapped up then I’m going to attach it to my face.
So there we go and just kind of hold them in place. Put on several layers to make it stick. As it dries, you kind of curve it up let it lay how you want. I rest of this on a bucket which really helps. All right, so it’s taking shape and then I think in the end what I want to do is take some plaster of paris and I’m just going to kind of put some extra plaster of paris on top of this and smooth it out to make sure that I cover up in that gauze. All right and then it’s going to be ready for painting.
And when it comes to painting this thing you can do it very simple. I just used a little gold and silver and it transforms this mask into something very fun so there we go. Well, I guess I could turn it to a terrible tragedy or you take this and turn it into an opportunity to show you how I fix this thing because life just isn’t perfect, no matter what face you put on.
So here we go this thing is really weak. So we’re going to have to put something like a split on it and that’s where the only way to roistering from that up and it would be just a simple as pickling a piece of popsicle stick and then you’re going to take your plaster strip. Dip it in the water and then just simply wrap it around a couple of times and tighten this thing up. Okay so here we go. I’ve got my split on and then I’ve wrapped it up with the plaster wrap and then what we have to do is wait for this baby to get really hard and then I can repaint and we’ll be back in action.
