You heard me. Hey, guys! Eddie here, welcome to Edie's Fashion Factory, and yes, I know what you are thinking. Why am I dressed in this funky apron instead of fabulous styles I normally wear? Because today, we are dyeing.
Creating fashion by yourself for yourself. And why? Because if you are expressing yourself, nobody else is going to do it for you. So let's get started. Today, we are making a modern nightdress that you hand paint Rit dye, then we are actually going to heat set the dyes using a microwave. How hi-tech is that?
Here's the stuff you'll need. A simple white cotton dress, your choice of Rit dyes, a bunch of plastic containers, a measuring cup and spoons, four brushes, rubber gloves, plastic wrap, a plastic tablecloth, paper towels, a blue chalk pencil, a yardstick, parchment paper, and we are ready to rock.
Cover your worktable with the plastic cloth. Don your rubber gloves. Nurse, prep the patient, start. Then stir it up.
Lay the dress on layers of overlapped plastic wrap. Using a yardstick, draw a vertical blue chalk line on the dress about a third of the way across. Starting at the top paint about a third of the dress golden yellow on the outer edge to the chalk line. Use horizontal strips, paint teal dye on the bottom-third of the dress. Paint fuchsia dye in the middle-third of the dress, overlapping the other colors by an inch or so.
Put a piece of parchment paper over the white side of the dress and fold the painted section over it. Then repeat the process on the backside. After painting the other side, lay it back on the plastic, remove the parchment paper. Then paint navy dye on the rest of the dress using long vertical strokes.
Put a new piece of parchment paper over the rainbow colors. And paint navy dye on the back side of the dress. When you're satisfied with your masterpiece, cover it with plastic wrap and seal the edges. Then fold it to fit in the microwave.
Cover the bottom of your microwave with paper towels, place the plastic wrap just on the top. Set on high for two minutes, and take a well-deserved break. Wear rubber gloves to remove the dress. Cut open the plastic wrap, and allow everything to cool. To remove excess dyes, rinse the dress in changes of cool water until the water runs clear. Wash it and dry it.
