Okay, now I’m going to flip it back and while I was working, I decided that I wanted there to be a separation between the body of the bird of the bird and his wings. And I’m going to show you how I’m going to make that happen, I’m just going to sketch lightly my lines then I start on the wing. Now curves take a little practice to cut with an X-Acto knife so if you’ve got a practice piece of paper, it might not be a bad idea if you’re doing curves to practice.
Okay, now I’m going to stop short of where my line is and actually what I’m going to do is I’m going to cut a little bit off to the edge of that line, okay, so there comes the wing and then this way when I go to cut, I’m going to follow this line, okay, if you can see that.
And sometimes when you’re doing a curve, if you turn the paper, it’s helpful. Okay, so here we’ve got the top layer of our Mola.
Okay, now we get to pick the colors and we’re just going to go through here and see what we think looks best against the purple so I think we’re going to go ahead with this and what you’ll need to do next is glue this down to the color you’ve just chosen, okay. Now the easiest way to use, to glue these down is to use a spray adhesive. The reason why is that if you try and do a glue stick, there’s a chance that you might tear some of your openings here which you don’t want to do and the spray glue puts down at even layer of glue real quickly for you and then all you have to do is lay the piece down and then you have to line up the next color right on top of it, okay. The only tricky part is getting it centered because once this is stack, it’s stacked, okay.
So what we’re going to do next is apply the spray glue and what you need to do at home is to avoid spraying the entire table and all the furniture around it, you need to get a trash can and you lay, you’re actually going to lay this down inside the trash can, the side that you want the glue on and then you’re going to spray about 12-14 inches away over the entire thing inside the trash can, in that way, you’re not going to get glue on the floor or any place else; your mom doesn’t want you to get it.
So, I’m going to go ahead and spray glue this, okay I just sprayed this and I’m going to lay it with the glue face up, okay, real carefully and then I’m going to take my yellow piece of paper and I’m going to line it up really carefully with the edge here, the end, there we have it, okay.
Next step is going to be to cut openings once again on this next color and you’re going to leave a little border the yellow and I’ll show you what I mean. I’m going to do those verticals; remember how we but all the same direction from top to bottom and I’m cutting in leaving about, oh I don’t know, an eighth of an inch. You know some of these I may have to leave more like a sixteenth but the X-Acto knife can do that really easily for you.
And then I turn the paper and once again I cut top to bottom and these we’re going to pop out and then you’re going to see how we’re leaving the yellow showing a border of yellow showing inside of all the purple openings, okay.
So I’m just going to go ahead and continue to cut all these openings. Well, we’re almost finished here with cutting the openings in the background and then we’re going to cut the bird, okay, we got them all.
And now we’re going to start picking some more colors. On this one, the real Mola, you’ll notice that the background has different colors and openings so we’re going to do the same sort of thing by actually cutting out different squares of paper called different colors and gluing them to the back, okay.
So let’s see, how about in the background, we’ll use, maybe we’ll alternate between orange and, let’s see how this would look; the orange and pink, so we’d have orange here and pink here and then an orange and pink and come up with kind of a background design here so I think that’s what we’ll do and what you need to do is just carefully figure out, you want to kind of guess the estimate how big of a paper you’re going to need to cover the back. And we’ll see if that’s going to work, okay.
So then I’m just going to take my glue stick and put some glue on the back and put the paper down, making sure that I’m not covering up any of the openings in the different section because it’s just, this one section that we want to have, the orange behind and let’s go ahead and do—if I just trace, get an idea of where things are, I can cut them a little bit smaller. And this part is actually where the head of the bird is, that will work.
Okay, I just finished the orange and you can get about or look at it and we’re going to start to do the pieces of pink behind there and now you can start to see the, how the backgrounds starting to alternate between the pink and the orange, you know, when you don’t have to just use two colors, you could add a third color in the background, if you wanted to.
Okay, now we’re going to pick some colors for the bird. Okay, so I think we’re going to go with the body of the bird is going to be blue so just like we did before, we are going to trace lightly the outline of the bird and I think I might actually separate his tail and his body and maybe put a different color behind here.
An then when I cut in out, I’m going to cut bigger, further away from my line so I have some extra paper that’s going to glue to the back. Let’s do our green wings. So now we’re going to cut two wings and probably his tail and then will continue, then we can add other colors inside so there’s a, this is what we’ve got so far; got the blue body and the green wings and then we’re going to have a green tail and then you might be able to guess that what we’re going to do next is continue to cut so that we have a thin layer of blue showing here, okay. Actually, why don’t we just go ahead and do this so you can get an idea, okay. Now we got his other wing to do and there we’ve got the blue and the green part; with got the wings and now we’re going to do something a little bit different on the tail. I think we’re going to cut out some different kinds of designs instead of doing one more row here and then we’ll put another color behind so I’m thinking, I’m going to do some curved, vertical lines like these.
I think maybe what we’ll do is we’ll put this red behind here. So what I’m going to do is I’m going to spray the entire back of this whole grid here that has all these different patch, just like a patch work of color. So I’m going to go and spray this, just finished gluing this; go to be really careful, it’s very sticky right now and I’m going to take this red sheet of paper and I’m going to line it up, the edges, the side and the edges and hope that I get right the first time, okay. And press hard and now you can see that we have a red bird.
Now at this point, I can come in here and cut out some other designs which I’m going to do and then place another color behind there. I’m in you could keep going.
And we’re going to go ahead and put that behind there so same thing you’re going, I’m going to take this and I’m going to spray the entire back of it, all right, got it all sprayed and be careful not to get stacked to it.
Now we’re going to have to line this up again with the corners in the edge. It’s almost like making a sandwich of pieces of paper, lots of pieces of paper, okay. I think we’re pretty we’re pretty close; the only thing I want to do is cut through this and put a different color behind here for the eye of the bird. And I think that Mola is finished and I don’t know if it will bring this much money as one of these real ones from the San Blas Islands from the Cuna Indians but for sure it will bring lots of joy and pleasure to all the people who are going to look at it in your home. Thank you.
