Well, now that you guys are becoming this incredible artist, you are going to need a place to keep your brushes or your pencils. So it’s always kind of fun to take leftovers laying around the house and decorate them in such a way that it just becomes more fun to use the items that are in the container. So, thin can works great, some polymer medium, some paper or fabric pieces or left over wrapping paper, construction paper, anything you can find maybe some pipe cleaners, I’ve got ribbons and decorative border stuff too to add on there and some of those fake gem stones and there’s a new product out that features different kinds of animal print and it come in two different sizes, we’ve got the 12 by 18 inch size and then we’ve got the little origami size ones.
And then what I’m going to is use the big one for the basic piece of paper to cover the can and then I’m going to use the smaller animal prints to kind of cut out some shapes and maybe decorate on here and then we’ll probably put some kind of rick-rack. We’ll hot glue it along the edge there to decorate and possibly add some of these sparkly gemstones. But this particular one was just made with scrap piece of fur and a piece of ribbon that had different animals on it. Just tied it around, tied it in a nice bow and there you have it, real simple pencil can or for your brushes.
So, the first thing that you’re going to need to do is get your ruler. You need scissors, some polymer, brushes again and then all your bits and pieces that you're going to add on there. And I definitely need a pencil, because I’m going to do some measuring and what you want to do is you want to measure it from the bottom edge of the lip on the can to the top edge of the lip, at the bottom of the can. So, if I take a pretty accurate measurement here, it’s about four and an eighth, okay.
So, what I'm going to do is measure on this piece of paper from the edge. I’m going to measure four and an eighth and actually it was just a 10 over four and an eighth’s so we’ll just add that on there and then I’m going to line up my two marks and draw a straight line and then I’m going to cut very carefully, try and make a really straight cut. If you happen ton have a little cutting board at home with the sliding razor on it, that’s even better. Okay and I just want to check and see if this is going to fit. Okay, it looks pretty good and it’s going to come around to about here. So, I’m just going to go ahead and carefully cut that off there. That’ll give us a little bit of overlap and that’s a pretty simple way to start and I’m going to take my brush and I’m just going to put some polymer medium on here and probably, the most important place is at the top and at the bottom.
Okay, we’re just going to place this on here and I’ll wrap and then I’ll put some polymer underneath here so that this piece of paper is going to stick to the other piece where they overlapped then rub it and there you have it. And this will dry and all the little 4:48 will come out of it and I think maybe we’ll cut some shapes out of the smaller version here at the zebra print. We could just do some shapes and you’ll notice how it drew in the backside, in that way you won’t see my pencil lines in the front and we’re just going to kind of put some different zebra stripes around here just for fun and just we’re going to put some polymer on here. I’m just going to put on there and I think we’ll do one more okay—oops! Cups and glue there. So, there we’ve got a zebra print pattern going on here and let’s see. Maybe what we’ll do is we’ll like—if I’m going to put red gem stones on here, I might want to repeat the red in that by using a pipe cleaners so why we not go ahead we’ll just use red here is our color and I’m going to squeeze some hot glue here.
Now this one, you may need some help with. You just have to really be careful not to get your fingers on the glue because it’s definitely hot and you just squeeze a little bit on about two inches worth because you can’t do the whole thing at once. Because if you squirt hot glue all the way around the rim, by the time you’ve got done squirting it, its all going to all be hardened up and you’ll have to pull it off and start again because it dries really quickly. So you have to do a little bit than stick it down to a little bit and then stick it down.
Pipe cleaners cut very easily, decorate the bottom one. Okay, so there we’ve got our little design later and let’s see if we can find some red stones in here. I don’t want to put many because it may look a little tucky. Let’s see, let’s put one right here and put a big one up here. When you’re doing something that’s cylindrical, you have to remember, that you going to see it from all different vintage points. So you want to kind of look at the composition from this angle and then you might turn it and do something on the other side that looks like you actually planned it out and you didn’t just kind of haphazardly stick things down there just like the ideas sticking with black white and red.
I always think that it looks like really nice together okay let’s put red one up here and looks like I needed other glue stick. Remember all you have to do is just stick it right in there and is going to push up the next one. Okay, we’ll put up one out there. Okay now after the hot glue dries a little bit and then you have to go back and pull out your spider webs because you know hot glue makes lots of spider webs. So there we have it a little pencil cans or whatever you going to use it for decorated and ready for you to put in to it whatever you would like.
Measure from rim to rim on the can to determine the height of the piece of paper to cover the can. Line up the two marks you’ve made on your paper. Draw a line and cut. Roll the can over the paper. Leave some overlap for full coverage and easy gluing. Pain polymer over you can and presses the paper in place. Decorate as you wish and then fill your fancy can with brushes pencils or whatever.
