In this clip on intermediate billiards, I’d like to show you how to make a real shot in a game of pool. Let’s take a look at this 13 bal that I’ve set up along the rail—that I have frozen to the rail. What makes this shot a little bit complicated in terms of a normal aiming technique is the rail height. The rail height will come a little bit above center. It actually comes up about 70% on the height of the ball so the rail is a little bit higher and it’s going to affect on where we aim this ball. And if you want to look at some books from 30 years ago, the advice would have been to strike the cue ball to hit the rail and the object ball at the same time. Well, that generally doesn’t work. I mean, it may work if it’s very close to the pocket if the object ball is close because you have some large margins there. But it does not work as you go further up the rail. Most times, particularly when you have a very sharp angle, you’re actually going to strike the rail a hair before the cue ball strikes the object ball. So you’re looking to strike the rail first and oftentimes, you’re going to apply a little bit of angles, a little bit of spin on this cue ball. Now, depending on what angle you approach will affect the kind of angles or the kind of horizontal spin that you put on the ball.
In this one, I’m going to put a little bit of left angles, try to strike this rail slightly before it hits the object ball and make the object ball go in. Let’s try it.
If you looked very carefully, you’ll see that I hit the rail first and it came off. Now, that will allow me to make very strange angles. Again, the further up the object ball is on the rail, the more difficult the shot becomes. But as a general rule, you’re looking to strike the rail first just prior if you hit the object ball and that’s how you make a rail shot in a game of pool.
