How to make Sex on a Mexican Beach
Welcome to Common Man Cocktails. I'm your host Derrick Schommer. Today we’re going to be creating the cocktail “Sex on the Mexican Beach” and this was submitted by Dennis and this is a drink that he made on his own. So, I don’t want to do it ahead of time, so I wanted to have a full reaction for everybody especially Dennis, and to see what’s it going to be like.
So, when I picked for specific labels, we’re going to use a Senor Frogs Reposado. It’s pretty cool. It’s a neat Reposado. I think it’s like rum at $25.00. I’ll put it in a lower half but I think it’s under $25.00 for that. If you could find it, it’s kind of spending, and I didn’t know the Senor Frog is a restaurant really and I think the Caribbean area in Mexico and so they kind brought their brand out in the branch of the market, so that’s kind of neat.
We’re going to use a little sweet-sour mix. Let’s see, we got some orange juicy in here so we’re going to do two ounces of the tequila, an ounce of sweet-sour mix, two ounces of orange juice, two ounces of cranberry juice, a splash of grenadine. Everybody got to have a splash. I think it’s sticky. We’re going to put it in a Collins glass, so it’s not a cocktail glass this week and shake it, pour it, done.
So, what we’re going to do is get it all together. Also we’re going to use our new uberbar tools.com strainer. It’s called the Strain Ray. I’d like to tell you if anybody be interested in this fun thinking down the line doing like a bar tools episode because there are so many cool bar tools out there. And so this is your classic NFM strainer which is a good quality strainer. It’s kind of heavy. This one is definitely heavier. It’s got more of a grip to it so you can place it on, but more ergonomic if you’re into ergonomics so it’s a weightier strainer. And here is your $5.00 strainer that you can get on at Amazon or at the store so it’s quite a big difference. This is really just flimsy metal probably it looks like something you get on a PC case almost like that metal that it almost cuts you.
So, you’ll get a way pay for if you’re just doing a cup of drinks, no big deal. I’ve seen people bought these $5.00 strainers. It works perfectly fine. If you’re going to have a home bar though something like this kind is impressive plus it brings all your ingredients and your equipment up to pro-level if you will. So, you just consider that if you’re into the home bar scene, and we’re going to throw some ice in here. Also, this is going to run you about $26.00, forget to mention. NFM, I think is like the $18.00 range and then you can get the $5.00 alternatives if you’re into the $5.00 alternatives.
We’ll do our two ounces of Reposado. Hey, go to everydaydrinkers.tv/vote, so that you could vote to for us this week. I think it ends on Saturday for the voting for the how-to videos and how cast. That will be awesome if you’ll do that. Get us up in the rank so we’ll look like we’re awesome.
We’ll do one ounce of the sweet-sour. I don’t want to use too much because that can totally sweeten the drink past the extreme. We’ll used two ounces of orange juice over here and then two ounces of the cranberry juice. So, that does with the color so you’re getting a Tequila Sunrise type color.
I kind of get a peach flavor color to it and then I’ll splash a little of grenadine to really change that up to make sure it stays red permanently. We’ll shake that up, here we go. We’ll throw some ice in our Collins glass. There you go, so you’re getting like a pink color almost, like a tropical. It’s kind of looks like tropical.
Now, Dennis didn’t say it needed a garnish but that looks pretty good, kind of clashes with pink a little bit. It gives you that tropical flair and it’s got the sweet-sour which is going to give you that innate lime. You could do a cherry too if you really wanted but I don’t know if you see it too much. Well, cherry, a lime and orange make it like a Tiki glass or Tiki cocktail.
It smells like Reposado so that’s kind of a good sign. It tastes like Reposado. I don’t know why this is so good. I don’t know I feel like it because you’re not a big fan of Reposado but it has a different taste profile to it than some other Reposado so your drink flavoring may vary depending on what you choose to use. Just don’t use Cuervo Gold, use 100% Agave, and watch your tequila tasting for why but it’s a sexy looking. It’s tropical looking. It’s like tequila.
I can almost see this being a margarita. It almost has that margarita taste to it. If you gave it a little orange, it’s got the orange so it really fix everything you’ll get in your margarita except of course, you got the cranberry juice, so some people used sweet-sour, some people Cointreau or Triple Sec which is going to give you orange. Overall, I think it’s a pretty neat drink. It’s like a Flip on the margarita giving you something a little difference.
So thank you, Dennis for your cocktail. Definitely, it’s refreshing, too. That’s important. That’s your “Sex on a Mexican Beach.” It’s all about location. It’s not the Sex on the Beach. It’s a different drink.
