How to Make a Vest Cover Up

Hi, I’m Megan Nicolay. You might remember me from past episode of Thread Banger. I’m the author of Generation T, 108 ways to transform a t-shirt and Generation T beyond fashion, 120 new ways to transform a t-shirt. Now, you may think that t-shirt is a garment exclusive for the spring and summer months. But if you transform your t-shirt into a scarf, hat, gloves, mittens even, you can weigh your t-shirt 365 days a year. So the last time I was in Thread Banger, a lot of you ask about the scarf that I was wearing. So by popular demand, today we’re going to make that scarf. It’s called Maniac, number 91 in my new book. The materials you need are pretty basic. One large t-shirt, a pair of scissors and pin or brooch. The first step is to cut off the bottom of the t-shirt just below the sleeves. Next, make a vertical cut through just one layer of the t-shirt that you would be just created. Then unfold the rectangle and you’ve just made and orient the piece of fabric so that the hams are on the top. Now comes the super repetitive part, you’ll be making cuts about a half an inch apart, up from the bottom of the piece of fabric, all the way up to about one inch high of the ham. If you have a cutter and a ruler this might go a little bit faster. Just make sure that you don’t accidentally cut through the ham. That was exhausting. Now after you finish cutting the entire length of the scarf, all you’re going to do is tog a little bit on your new french and you’re done. All you need to do is wrap the scarf around couple times, pin your two corners together and there you have, you’re new so Maniac scarf. But hey, if t-shirt is in your thing, don’t worry. When we come back, I’ll show you bunch of other ways to transform your t-shirts into scarfs. Another popular t-shirt scarf style is the loop-tee-loop scarf, project number 26 in Generation T beyond fashion. All you need is one large t-shirt with your pair of scissors and your sewing machine, needle and thread. To start, lay your t-shirt flat and cut a straight line, cutting the bottom of the t-shirt off just a little bit of the sleeves. Next, cut the bottom ham off, then fold this to even half, open end to open end to figure out where your center is and then cut along that fold making two smaller tubes. Now that you have your two equal tubes, you’ll cut through each one, your just one layer to make two equal strips. Layer the two strips on top of each other, right sides in lining up the edges. And now, we’ve got the 17 out. To turn these two strips into one long loop, we’re going to stitch just along those short ends where we have them there together. Use the regular straight stitch if you’re using a sewing machine, or if you’re using by ham, use your needle and thread and make looks fits around the edges. After you finish one side, do the other. Then just trim the ends, turn your scarf right side out and you can put it on. But if that little bit of sewing had give you a little bit nervous, don’t worry so this next design we’ll back to new so. To make this scarf, all you need is t-shirt and our pair of scissors. Step one, cut off the bottom ham. So to start, you’re cutting just a little notch in on a diagonal through just one layer at the bottom of the shirt. You cut on a diagonal until you are about four inches from the bottom edge. Continue cutting on that line, flip the t-shirt over and again, cutting through just one layer. As you pot, you’ll start you see this strip of fabric that you are creating. Continue cutting, maintaining that four inches from the row edge. When you hit the sleeves, just start tapering off the same where you did start the scarf on a diagonal. So now you this nice long scarf that you can wrap around and around and around.
