Jennifer Bertrand: Look at these amazing living room walls. You can create your own high end style by using a stencil. All you need is poster board, some paint and a little inspiration. You can draw inspirations for your stencils, from a pillow, fabric even a wall paper design. The sky is the limit.
To make a stencil, I took two pieces of poster board and taped them together. You don't have to use two pieces of poster board, it's whatever fits the scale of your room. Then I'm going to start by drawing the design on the poster board. I'm going to free hand my designs; you could use a ruler and do something simpler, like stripes, squares, anything that can be measured out with a ruler.
After you are happy with your design, now it's time to start cutting out your stencil. I'm using a box cutter; you could scissors if you like. Drawing the pattern is the hardest part, now you're just going to trace over your lines. Cutting it out is nice and easy. To keep them damaging my table, I used a piece of wood, underneath my poster board. Once you start cutting out your pattern, you can start to see how it's going to look on your wall. Everywhere I have cut out. is where our paint is going to go on the wall.
Now that we've made our stencil, I'm taping it to the wall. I'm using a low tack tape, because that won't pull up your wall paint. I decided to paint a different color under my stencil, you don't have to, but you if you want to add an extra detail, it's well worth it. I'm going to use a small foam roller and start applying my paint. You don't want to put too much paint on your roller. That's what's going to help you keep from having bleeding under your stencil.
The fun part about the stencil is that you can use it in any type of room. You can use it in a kids room, you can use it in your living room. So easy, anyone can do this.
If you see bleeding lines under your stencil, don't worry, you can always fix them. You can easily take an artist brush and go back in and paint in your line. The cool part is you don't really have to stress out when doing this. That's the best part of our paint is everything is fixable. For just the cost of paint and a few hours of time, I have created a stunning effect that's sure to be a conversation starter.
