My name is Ryan Burch. I am 20 years old and I live Encinitas, California. The waves I normally surf are generally mushy and small. I don’t have a lot of resources here, so I went to a local hardware store and just got pieces that were really thin, they’re like an inch-thick of just the local wood and I laminated them too thick and three pieces wide.
But the board is something like 18 inches wide. It was pretty heavy, but not heavy enough to be like all-load board but not light enough to be like an Alia. And I didn’t know what I was doing when I was shaping it, so it was all rolled and all the edges was battery and like shaped it all with like a hand planer even though I had a mechanical planer, I just thought it would be cooler, I have no idea of why I did that. I was like all right, here’s my electrical planer. This thing is 12 feet long. It’s sitting here in my house forever. But I’m going to use a little hand tool and this is like sizzle away at it. I just had patty on, sizzle away with the board for probably like three days straight.
It was super lame and things didn’t worked at all, but I had so much fun in doing it. And it was like, “Whoa, I guarantee you I can make it work when I finally finish it.” The thing is flexi, I don’t know. I was inspired by previous failure to try to make something that would actually work.
And then the reason behind making it so flexi is because the one that is stiffer, the one before didn’t worked at all. So I figured cheaper, this one layer wood, and it will make something that’s extremely flexi. And like the flex thing is kind of inspired by a boy that Sarah Sutton was writing, that was super flexi and it seemed to work really well and just Alia’s in general seemed to work with a bit if flex. I just wanted to see how this extreme flex would work. And the bottom is rolled because I let the plank sit at my house so long. I figured I choose the rolled as opposed to be concave, the board is pretty unique to ride on but the whole design thing is just a concept, something like how I could make a better that is better for going straight.
