This drink is called a Southern Comfort Manhattan. We’re going to make it on the rocks which means we’re going to put it in a short glass. We’re going to full it up with ice and we’re going to use in our Southern Comfort Manhattan is dry vermouth and as you may remember from our previous lesson we used a dash of it. Dry vermouth is an infused white wine and infused means that something’s added to it. With vermouth, there’s different companies all have their own secret recipe and they may taste slightly difference but most people cannot tell the difference. Vermouth has a very distinct flavor to it. It’s a little thicker than a regular white wine because they added particles with purpose to it to give it an interesting unique flavor to it.
The liqueur that we’re going to use in our Southern Comfort Manhattan, Southern Comfort is an American Whiskey that has added the flavoring to it. It was invented by a bartender back in the 1840s and what he did is he took an American Whiskey probably a type of Bourbon which is just where a particular American Whiskey comes from and added some honey to it to sweetened it up and then some peaches or peach syrup.
So we’re going to use two ounces of our Southern Comfort, then what we’re going to add is a cherry to it because it has a sweet flavor. Now if you’ve seen some of our previous lessons where we’re going to put a couple of sip sticks in there so the customer can stir it and you’re saying why did you use dry vermouth? Why do we use dry vermouth? Because Southern Comfort is sweet and if you use sweet vermouth with the Southern Comfort the drink would be too sweet, so I want to cut the sweetness and that’s why we use the dry vermouth. So there we have it our Southern Comfort Manhattan. Enjoy it!
