We’re going to go across the globe to India where we’re going to look at some hand drawn black lacquered picture frames. What you’re going to need for this project are some little pre cut picture frames. If you don’t happen to have these at home you could always get a sheet of tag board, get out your ruler, your pencil and do some measuring, and use an exactor knife to cut out the centers of them.
These actually come already made and there are two different sizes here, one actually pops out off the other and we’ve got rectangular one. And then we have a picture frame with the oval in the center which I used for this design that I made. And of course we’ll put a bangle tiger in there from India just to make it a little bit more authentic. You’re going to need some paint marker, pencil, some paper to sketch out your ideas; it’s always a good idea to start with a preliminary sketch. Of course if you’re really an adventurous artist, you can go ahead and do your drawing right on the picture frame but I always think it’s a good idea to plan things out because you’ll never know when you do the first drawing between the time of transferring it to the finished product you may come up with some different ideas that you like better.
So, I think I'm just going to start with designs typically floral and swiggles, and vines. You could put animals in there if you wanted to. I'm just going to start in the corner so I though that would be a good place to start. And I think what I’m going to do is to try and make this symmetrical so what I’ll do in one corner, I want to repeat in the other corner. We can always fix this later, it don’t have to be perfect the first time around, and they don’t have to be perfectly drawn on the actual picture frame until you start with the paint pens.
And you’re going to want a variety of colors and especially black because that’s going to mimic the black lacquered paint that they used to make these. I think what I'm going to do next is a kind of a vine here and I’ll one on this side, and then put some flowers here. All right, I’ve got my sketch completed knowing that probably when I go to redraw it on here I might make some changes. So, I'm going to go ahead and start to draw this on the actual picture frame and probably while I'm working I’ll see some areas where I want to make some changes. So we’ll just going to do the same thing we did but the next thing about a sketch is that you can do all the erasing, fixing of things on the practice one and then when you go do the good one its nice and clean. You don’t have eraser marks everywhere and run into any problems. Okay, I'm just about finished here and now comes’ the fun part.
Now we’re going to pick out lots of bright colors to work with and you need a black, we’ll need some silver and gold to decorate. The Chinese also do a lot with a black lacquer. They have beautiful furniture; you’ll find Indian furniture that’s decorated with black lacquer paint. They’re quite nice. I think I’ll stay away from the dark blue, maybe some green here.
So I think we can go for lots of colors and then the black serves as a really nice contrast. And then at the very end you just come in with the silver and gold and put some accents there. So let’s just go ahead and just jump right in there and start building our design. While you’re doing this, you can think about a favorite photograph that you might want to put inside of this frame. Whatever I’ll do on one side, I'm going to do it on the other side so that the design is going to be symmetrical. So I think I’ll put some red here and at some point later I could gold or silver outline around that red, might look kind of nice next to the black background.
