How to Make and Interpret Tally Charts
Make and Interpret a Tally Chart and Frequency Table. So in this problem it states that Mr. Andrew’s class got the following scores on a five-word spelling test. The data is given below.
So, our first part is we need to make a tally chart and frequency table to show the data then answer the question. So to make a tally chart, we can keep track of data in a tally table by making a mark for each thing counted. So, this would be an example of a tally chart. Each time a value occurs, a mark such as this is to the right of the value. So, the number zero occurs only one time in this data set so we just put one that tally.
So, five students got four correct. We have one, two, three, four, five, and we’re making tallies. The four tallies with that slash across represents five. So this equals five. So then, the number of students that scored a four would be five.
So now, we can also make a frequency table from this tally chart. So, in the tally table above, zero occurs one time, and then so on. So our frequency table will have B such. So the number correct, and then how many times. So zero correct occurs one time, and one correct occurs two times. So we just take the information from the tally table and we put it into our frequency table.
Now let’s answer the question. How many students had five correct? So we can read the value from the tally table or tally chart, or the frequency table. So if we read from the tally table, in the tally table, there are six tallies to the right of five. So six students had five words correct. If we read the values on the frequency chart, six is tabulated to the right of five. So that means six students had five words correct.
Things to remember and to keep in mind, is that we can keep track of data in a tally chart and a frequency table. Now, you can keep track of the data using a tally chart by making a mark for each thing counted. Each time a value occurs, a mark such as a dash, just like that, to the right of the value in the tally chart. To read a value from a tally chart, we count the number if tallies to the right of the value.
